At this time of year, I feel as if the Church has been in the Liturgical Season of Ordinary Time forever. It has been a long time since Easter, and even the stores around here have not started putting out Christmas decorations quite yet. I struggle to remember which Sunday we are celebrating. Is it the 18th? Oh wait, it’s the 24th Sunday already? Even though the Sundays seem to blur together at this time of year, I do appreciate Ordinary Time, because the season constantly reminds us that the divine is present in the ordinary unfolding of our lives.

While many of us try to do something extra to mark Advent and Lent, Ordinary Time reminds us to look for the presence of God all around us that we so often pass by, from flowers blooming in the sidewalk to acts of kindness on the street. Ordinary Times invites us to discern in a different way than in Lent or Advent, by reminding us that discernment is often about learning how God fits into our everyday lives, whether by noticing those times when we are aware of the presence of God, or by inviting us to look a little deeper to see the work of God all around us.

Tiempo Ordinario

En esta época del año, siento como si la Iglesia ha estado en el Tiempo Litúrgico del Tiempo Ordinario para siempre. Ha pasado mucho tiempo desde la Pascua, aún las tiendas de aquí no han comenzado a poner adornos Navideños. Me toma mucho esfuerzo recordar qué Domingo estamos celebrando. ¿Es el 18? Oh, espera, ¿ya es el Domingo 24? Aunque los Domingos parecen mezclarse la una con la otra durante esta época del año, aprecio el Tiempo Ordinario, porque la temporada nos recuerda constantemente que lo divino está presente en el desarrollo ordinario de nuestras vidas.

Mientras muchas de nosotras intentamos hacer algo extra para conmemorar el Adviento y la Cuaresma, el Tiempo Ordinario nos recuerda buscar la presencia de Dios a nuestro alrededor que muchas veces tomamos por alto, desde las flores que florecen en el pavimento a los actos de bondad en la calle. El Tiempo Ordinario nos invita a discernir de una manera diferente que en Cuaresma o Adviento, recordándonos que el discernimiento muchas veces se trata de aprender cómo Dios encaja en nuestra vida cotidiana, ya sea al notar esos momentos en los que somos conscientes de la presencia de Dios, o al invitarnos a mirar un poco más profundo para ver la obra de Dios a nuestro alrededor.
