In her book The Soul of a Pilgrim, Christine Valters Paintner invites us to consider the richness that can be found at thresholds. Trying to figure out our future (or “discerning”) is such a threshold. We are standing in one place in our lives, but wondering what could be our next steps or pondering how to commit our life energy in response to the needs of others. At a threshold we are neither firmly in one place or the other, but in between.

Those familiar with gardening will tell you that the edges of gardens are rich with life. Check out the edge of the next garden you see for how busy the ants and other insects are as they move in and around plants. Check out the edge – or beach – of a lake or river and notice all the life that’s busy on the shore. If the waves wash over the shore, then even more living things may become visible. Edges are places rich with possibilities!

Discerning what we will do with our lives also is a rich place to be in our lives. The Holy Spirit is nudging us. Our thoughts and concerns about it invade otherwise quiet times. We may find it a challenge to be still when we are engaged in thinking about our future. Our prayer is focused on waiting and listening for where the Spirit is leading us. Know that the Sisters are praying for you.

Riqueza a Cada Paso

En su libro El alma de un Peregrino, Christine Valters Paintner nos invita a considerar la riqueza que se puede encontrar en los umbrales. Tratar de averiguar nuestro futuro (o "discernir") es tal umbral. Estamos paradas en un lugar de nuestras vidas, pero nos preguntamos cuáles podrían ser nuestros próximos pasos o reflexionamos sobre cómo comprometer nuestra energía vital en respuesta a las necesidades de los demás. En un umbral no estamos firmemente en un lugar o en el otro, sino en el medio.

Quienes tengan conocimiento con la jardinería le dirán que los bordes de los jardines están llenos de vida. Mire el borde del próximo jardín que vea para ver cuán ocupadas están las hormigas y otros insectos a medida que se mueven dentro y alrededor de las plantas. Mire el borde, o la playa, de un lago o río y observe toda la vida que está ocupada en la orilla. Si las olas inundan la orilla, es posible que se vean aún más seres vivos. ¡Los bordes son lugares ricos en posibilidades!

Discernir lo que haremos con nuestras vidas también es un lugar rico para estar en nuestras vidas. El Espíritu Santo nos está empujando. Nuestros pensamientos y preocupaciones al respecto invaden tiempos que de otro modo serían tranquilos. Puede que nos resulte un desafío estar quietos cuando estamos pensando en nuestro futuro. Nuestra oración se enfoca en esperar y escuchar hacia dónde nos está guiando el Espíritu. Sepa que las Hermanas están orando por usted.
