Often these days we hear accusations that it is impossible to know the truth, and this plays out in everything between the suspicion when evaluating a dispute between two people to distrust in the media. As Christians, we know that truth is not only something that reflects the actuality of an event but is also a virtue that reveals something of God’s nature. By deeply observing reality, whether by paying attention to our surroundings when we are on a walk or being able to deeply listen to a friend, we are able to be present to a new aspect of who God is. I find this to be reflected in the still life paintings from the 17th century, where artists would paint flowers and fruit that had been pleasingly arranged in crystal vases and on silver platters. While some of the fruit or flowers would be at their most lovely and perfect, other flowers would be wilting and some of the fruit would show signs of rot. Yet, rather than marring the beauty of the painting, truthfully capturing these signs of fragility highlight the loveliness of the painting.

When we talk about our Mission as Adrian Dominican Sisters, we often frame it as “Seek Truth, Make Peace, Reverence Life.” These three actions are not easy at the best of times, and yet, as a community of Sisters, we have found that these actions sustain us, as well as provide challenge. Seeking truth ultimately nourishes our relationship with the divine and our relationships in community, as well as providing a foundation to make peace and to reverence life. I invite you to join in this mission of seeking truth by being open to the revelation of truth in moments of everyday reality, whether when taking a walk, enjoying a fresh strawberry, or creating a piece of artwork, and to see God’s presence in the present moment.

Busque La Verdad

En estos tiempos escuchamos acusaciones de que es imposible conocer la verdad, y esto se ve en todo, desde la sospecha al evaluar una discusión entre dos personas y hasta en la desconfianza en los medios. Como Cristianas, sabemos que la verdad no es solo algo que refleja la actualidad de un evento, sino también una virtud que revela algo de la naturaleza de Dios. Al observar profundamente la realidad, ya sea prestando atención a nuestro alrededor cuando caminamos o siendo capaces de escuchar profundamente a una amiga, podemos estar presentes a un nuevo aspecto de quién es Dios. Encuentro que esto se refleja en las pinturas del siglo XVII, donde los artistas pintaban flores y frutas que habían sido acomodadas agradablemente en jarrones de cristal y platos de plata. Mientras que algunas de las frutas o flores estaban en su punto más hermoso y perfecto, otras flores se estaban marchitando y algunas de las frutas mostraban signos de pudrición. Sin embargo, en lugar de destruir la belleza de la pintura, capturar con sinceridad estos signos de fragilidad resalta la belleza de la pintura.

Cuando hablamos de nuestra Misión como Hermanas Domínicas de Adrian, muchas veces la enmarcamos como "Busca la Verdad, Trabaja por la Paz, Honra la Vida". Estas tres acciones no son fáciles en el mejor de los casos y, sin embargo, como comunidad de Hermanas, hemos descubierto que estas acciones nos sostienen y nos brindan un desafío. Buscar la verdad nutre nuestra relación con lo divino y nuestras relaciones en comunidad, además de proveer un fundamento para hacer las paces y reverenciar la vida. Las invito a unirse a esta misión en búsqueda de la verdad estando abiertas a la revelación de la verdad en los momentos de la realidad cotidiana, ya sea al caminar, disfrutar de una fresa fresca o crear una obra de arte, y ver la presencia de Dios en el momento presente.
