Take Nothing For The Journey

“Take nothing for the journey.” These words from the Gospel of Mark, rarely heard in our lives today, brought back a memory of my vocational journey. Thinking about becoming a sister when I was a teenager meant just that. It meant leaving some of my own personal ways and embracing this new journey of becoming a Dominican Sister and doing God’s work. The call to religious life and service in the Church today isn’t quite that stark, but it still has elements of leaving one way of life and embracing another.

My journey as a Dominican Sister for more than five decades has given me many opportunities to pack and unpack things needed for each destination of the journey. Having what was needed to accomplish the tasks was all that the journey required. The gospel writers’ words were accurate in reminding me and us to take only what is needed when we do go on a journey. That story goes on to tell us to depend on others to provide what we didn’t have in our own backpack.

Listening and responding to God’s call in our lives requires a balance of making our decisions, but also depending on others as we venture out in new directions. Is there anything you need to discard to keep you on the journey of your vocational call? Take nothing for your journey and trust that God will provide the trail, the rest stops, the companions, and the destination.

No Lleve Nada Para La Jornada

“No lleve nada para la jornada”. Estas palabras del Evangelio de Marcos, rara vez escuchadas hoy en día, me trajeron recuerdos de mi jornada vocacional. Pensar en ser hermana en mi adolescencia significaba precisamente eso. Significaba dejar atrás algunas de mis costumbres y abrazar esta nueva jornada de convertirme en Hermana Domínica y hacer la obra de Dios. El llamado a la vida religiosa y al servicio en la Iglesia hoy no es tan marcado, pero aún contiene elementos de abandonar una forma de vida y abrazar otra.

Mi jornada como Hermana Domínica durante más de cinco décadas me ha dado muchas oportunidades para empacar y desempacar lo necesario para cada destino de la jornada. Tener lo necesario para cumplir con las tareas era todo lo que la jornada requería. Las palabras del escritor del evangelio fueron acertadas, en recordarme a mí y a todas nosotras, que debemos llevar solo lo necesario cuando emprendamos una jornada. Esa historia continúa invitándonos a depender de otras para que nos den lo que no teníamos en nuestra propia mochila.

Escuchar y responder al llamado de Dios en nuestras vidas requiere un equilibrio entre tomar decisiones, pero también depender en las demás al emprender nuevos caminos. ¿Hay algo que debe dejar para mantenerse en el camino de su llamado vocacional? No lleve nada en su jornada y confíe en que Dios le proveerá el camino, las paradas de descanso, las compañeras y el destino.
