Like shopping for groceries or harvesting the fruits of our gardens, an important feature in discerning is gathering information. So, if you have your symbolic “basket” ready to collect what you’ll need, let me mention a few items you may want to think about as you discern.

Your “basket” may be a journal where you think through your responses to these questions about skills needed in Religious Life: Can you live with ambiguity in your life, the Church, religious life? Are you flexible? Are you tolerant of other opinions besides your own? Do you have a high need for security? Can you raise questions that challenge the status quo? When you work with people is it with a spirit of generosity and cooperation with others? Do you live out of a spirit of hope? What evidence do you see that you can live a celibate life?

Other collections may include exploring the websites of congregations of women religious to learn about what they do and how they live out their charism. You might mention to your close friends that you’re thinking about this life choice and see whether they think the choice matches what they know about you and your gifts. You can talk with teachers or mentors about this life choice and listen to their feedback. What feedback do you want from them?

You’ll notice the basket is not full. Stay curious until you have enough information. Then it will be time to weigh the information in light of your desire and God’s desire for you. More next time on our desire. Are you called to “Preach with Your Life”?

El Proceso de Recolectar 

Al igual que comprar comestibles o cosechar los frutos de nuestros jardines, una característica importante para discernir es recolectar información.  Por lo tanto, si tiene su "canasta" simbólica lista para recolectar lo que necesita, permítame mencionar algunos puntos en los que tal vez guste pensar mientras que discierne.

Su "canasta" puede ser un diario en el que piense en sus respuestas a estas preguntas sobre las habilidades necesarias en la Vida Religiosa: ¿Puede vivir con ambigüedad en su vida, la Iglesia, la vida religiosa? ¿Es flexible? ¿Es tolerante con otras opiniones además de la suya? ¿Tiene una gran necesidad de seguridad? ¿Puede hacer preguntas que desafíen el statu quo? Cuando trabaja con personas, ¿es con un espíritu de generosidad y cooperación con los demás? ¿Vive con un espíritu de esperanza? ¿Qué evidencia ve que puede vivir una vida célibe?

Otras recolecciones pueden incluir explorar los sitios web de congregaciones de mujeres religiosas para aprender sobre lo que hacen y cómo viven su carisma.  Tal vez pueda mencionarle a sus amigas cercanas que está pensando en esta elección de vida y ver si piensan que la elección coincide con lo que saben de usted y sus dones.  Puede hablar con maestros o mentores sobre esta elección de vida y escuchar sus comentarios. ¿Qué comentarios quiere de ellos?

Se dará cuenta que la “canasta” no está llena.  Mantenga la curiosidad hasta que tenga suficiente información.  Entonces será hora de pesar la información a la luz de su deseo y el deseo de Dios por usted.  Tendremos más la próxima vez sobre nuestro deseo. ¿Es llamada a "Predicar con Su Vida"?
