The Gospel for last Sunday told the story of the tiny mustard seed that starts very small and grows over time. Unless a person had experience seeing a full-grown mustard bush it might be impossible to imagine all that’s contained in that tiny seed!

The same is true for considering how to decide where to commit myself for my future. What choice would allow me to express as fully as possible the gifts God has given me for the world? Here’s where the tiny seed comes into view. A call to life often shows up in very tiny, almost unnoticeable ways. It could be just a flash of imagining – “what if...?” Or a wish to make a difference in peoples’ lives. Or a desire for not just a life of service, but one grounded in prayer and reflection as well as a community of support.

These fleeting thoughts and longings are the seeds of call. As you settle into the process of discerning, it is important to pay attention to these seeds, bring them to prayer, perhaps journal with them, dream with them and talk them over with trusted guides/companions. As you do this, the seeds are nurtured and grow larger in your awareness, until it’s time to take a next step on the journey.

Las Más Pequeñas Semillas

El Evangelio del domingo pasado contó la historia de la pequeña semilla de mostaza que comienza muy pequeña y crece con el tiempo. A menos que una persona tenga la experiencia de ver un arbusto de mostaza completamente desarrollado, ¡podría ser imposible imaginar todo lo que contiene esa pequeña semilla!

Lo mismo es cierto para considerar cómo decidir dónde comprometerme para mi futuro. ¿Qué opción me permitiría expresar lo más plenamente posible los dones que Dios me ha dado para el mundo? Aquí es donde aparece la pequeña semilla. Un llamado a la vida muchas veces se manifiesta de formas muy pequeñas, casi imperceptibles. Podría ser solo un destello de imaginación: “¿y si ...? . .? ”. O el deseo de marcar una diferencia en la vida de las personas. O el deseo no solo de una vida de servicio, sino de una vida basada en la oración y la reflexión, así como en una comunidad de apoyo.

Estos pensamientos y anhelos fugaces son las semillas del llamado. A medida que se acomoda en el proceso del discernimiento, es importante prestar atención a estas semillas, llevarlas a la oración, tal vez escribir un diario con ellas, soñar con ellas y conversar sobre ellas con guías / compañeras de confianza. Al hacer esto, las semillas se nutren y se hacen más grandes en su conciencia, hasta que llega el momento de dar el siguiente paso en la jornada.
