The Unexpected Path | El Camino Inesperado

Stone path splits in two directions, surrounded by fir trees

When I was in middle and high school, I took several years of voice lessons. I really enjoyed singing, and I enjoyed learning about the craft and technique of singing. While, for a time, I thought about exploring music as a career, I eventually ended up studying different areas. Yet, the years I spent studying voice were not wasted, and I draw upon the skills I learned regularly when cantoring at mass or when preparing to speak in public. While I could look at my time studying voice as taking me away from the direction I ultimately discerned, another way to look at this experience is to see how I have built upon what I learned. Sometimes discernment takes us on unexpected directions away from the path that we expected, but that does not mean that discernment failed. Rather, it means that we truly entered into the process of discernment, and, in immersing ourselves, were open to the voice of God in our life.

Discernment looks more like a conversation than a voice coming down from above, and, as there are in the best conversations, there will be tangents and a natural changing of the subject. Searching leads to a deeper relationship with God, as we come to recognize how God has accompanied us through all the twists and turns of our journey, and showing us the beauty of all our adventures. Furthermore, the skills and insights that we gain from the journey, even from those times that we thought were a dead end, prepare us for the next stage on our journey.

Blessings,
Sister Katherine

Bendiciones,
Hermana Katherine
