When is a Religious Congregation the Right Fit for You?

There is conflicting advice on the Internet about when to know that a religious congregation is the right fit for a person. However, there are some clear signs that a religious congregation would be a good fit as well as some indications to keep looking! 

The first consideration is whether the congregation would accept someone as a candidate. For example, many congregations have age limits or policies around debt. If you meet these criteria, that is the first sign that a congregation might be a good fit for you. As a woman goes through the discernment process with a congregation, other questions might be asked about her ability to live out religious life, for example, her ability to live the vows and minister to the People of God. A vocation director will help a woman with these questions and help her to know if her life shows that she has the skills to live in religious life.

The second consideration is from the perspective of the person who is discerning entering a religious congregation. A good place to start is to ask yourself what you value most in a religious community. If you value praying with a community several times a day, then maybe a monastic community is a better for you than an active apostolic community where members are active in different ministries at all hours and might pray once a day. Another example is whether you want to join a community with an international presence or one that focuses on one specific location. All kinds of communities have value and richness, but they will feel very different! 

Finally, there are the intangible aspects to consider that are much more difficult to put into words Yet these are the aspects that ultimately help us determine whether we want to enter a community. To help narrow down these aspects, I find that these questions help to clarify whether a community is the right place: 

•    Do I see myself being able to live out the charism of this community? Do I identify with the charism?
•    Do I like the members that I am meeting and can I see myself enjoying spending more time with them? 
•    Do I see myself flourishing in this community and being able to be my whole self without having to hold pieces of my personality or interests back? 

From the outside, the process of discerning a religious community might look mysterious, the actual process is more straightforward than you might expect! I hope that these criteria help you to know where God is calling you, whatever your vocation might be.

¿Cuándo es una Congregación Religiosa una Buena Opción Para Usted?

En el internet se encuentran consejos contradictorios sobre cuándo se sabe si una congregación religiosa es la adecuada para una persona. Sin embargo, hay algunas señales claras de que una congregación religiosa sería una buena opción, así como también algunas indicaciones para seguir buscando.

La primera consideración es si la congregación aceptaría a alguien como candidata. Por ejemplo, muchas congregaciones tienen límites de edad o políticas sobre deudas. Si cumples con estos criterios, esa es la primera señal de que una congregación podría ser una buena opción para ti. A medida que una mujer pasa por el proceso de discernimiento con una congregación, es posible que se le hagan otras preguntas sobre su capacidad para vivir la vida religiosa, por ejemplo, su capacidad para vivir los votos y ministrar al Pueblo de Dios. Una directora de vocaciones ayudará a una mujer con estas preguntas y la ayudará a saber si su vida demuestra que tiene las habilidades para vivir la vida religiosa .

La segunda consideración es desde la perspectiva de la persona que está discerniendo si entrar en una congregación religiosa. Un buen lugar para comenzar es preguntarse qué es lo que más valora en una comunidad religiosa. Si valora orar con una comunidad varias veces al día, entonces tal vez una comunidad monástica sea mejor para ti que una comunidad apostólica activa donde los miembros activamente ejercen diferentes ministerios a todas horas y pueden orar una vez al día. Otro ejemplo es si desea unirse a una comunidad con presencia internacional o a una que se centre en un lugar específico. Muchas diferentes comunidades tienen valor y riqueza, ¡pero se sentirán muy diferentes!

Por último, están los aspectos intangibles que hay que tomar en cuenta y que son  mucho más difícil de expresar. Sin embargo, estos son los aspectos que, en última instancia, nos ayudan a determinar si queremos ingresar a una comunidad. Para ayudar a delimitar estos aspectos, siento que considerar estas preguntas ayudan a aclarar si una comunidad es el lugar adecuado:

•    ¿Me veo capaz de vivir el carisma de esta comunidad? ¿Me identifico con el carisma?
•    ¿Me gustan los miembros que estoy conociendo y puedo imaginarme disfrutando de pasar más tiempo con ellas?
•    ¿Me veo prosperando en esta comunidad y poder ser yo misma por completa sin tener que reservar partes de mi personalidad o intereses?

Desde afuera, el proceso de discernimiento de una comunidad religiosa puede parecer misterioso, pero en realidad es más sencillo de lo que te imaginas. Espero que estos criterios te ayuden a saber a dónde te llama Dios, sea cual sea tu vocación.
