Baptized Rita Bertha, Sister Jane Edward Schutz was born on January 6, 1920, in Detroit, to Anthony Joseph and Anna Mary (Jennings) Schutz. She was the sixth of fourteen children. Both of her mother’s parents were Lutheran, and she was reared in that religion. Her father was baptized in St. Clement Church in Centerline and attended St. Clement School through eighth grade. Before they married her mother was baptized Catholic and received her First Holy Communion on her wedding day.
