May 4, 2018, Prescott, Arizona – Sister Judy Byron, OP, and other faith-based investors have struggled for years to end the mass shootings and other forms of gun violence brought on by easy access to guns. Now, Sister Judy – Director of the Northwest Coalition for Responsible Investment and consultant for the Adrian Dominican Sisters’ Portfolio Advisory Board – will continue that struggle at the May 9 annual meeting of Sturm Ruger & Company. Stockholders will vote on a resolution written by faith-based investors to request that the weapons company be upfront about its efforts to lessen gun violence.

Dear Sister Byron,I agree; gun violence is out of control and needs to be addressed. If a driver kills someone while operating their vehicle drunk, we hold the driver of the vehicle responsible and not the manufacturer of the vehicle. Yet if someone operating a gun kills someone, the manufacturer of the gun is responsible and not the person operating it. This is a double standard.To control gun violence, we need to hold accountable the people who fail to follow gun laws already in place. As an example: Devin Patric Kelley shot and killed more than 20 people in Sutherland Springs, Texas on Sunday, November 5, 2017. He faced court-martial and was discharged from the Air Force for allegedly assaulting his wife and child. It was the responsibility of the United States Air Force to enter Mr. Kelley into a national database which would have flagged him and disqualified him from being able to purchase a firearm. It was that breakdown that allowed him to get his hands on a gun.We don't need more gun laws, we need the existing laws enforced. AND when people fail to follow existing gun laws, THEY should be held criminally liable.You can be certain that if the person responsible for entering Mr. Kelley's information into the database knew that they would be held criminally accountable if they failed to do their job, it would get done!
