Friendship and the Spiritual Life

Many of us had the experience of having a best friend when we were growing up. I have memories of going trick-or-treating or having sleepovers with my best friend in elementary school. What I found most exciting was how not only did I feel like I could connect with my friend, but also all the ways we learned from one another. Those same qualities that made me connect so much with my childhood best friend are the same ones that I today bring to my relationship with God.

Friendship with God is something that I learned about when I was a candidate with the Adrian Dominican Sisters. By framing our relationship with God as a friendship, we can begin to see the mutuality that this relationship calls us to. God is generous with us in many ways, and we also bring something to this relationship when we allow ourselves to be vulnerable and open to God. This vulnerability can be seen in confessing how we have messed up, but it can also be found when we are honest in our discernment about the desires in our hearts.

Our relationship with God can’t be separated from our relationship with others. When I am struggling with my relationships generally, my relationship with God also feels more distant and difficult. When I find moments of closeness and connection with those around me, it is easier for me to feel connected with God. Tellingly, many saints had friendships where their relationship with God brought them together, and they explored their relationship with God in their conversations with one another to deepen their relationship with God and each other.

My relationships with my peers look different now than they did in second grade, when recess was a major opportunity to socialize. Part of the maturity that I have been called to is asking how God can be part of my relationships with others. Within my religious community, conversations often turn towards spirituality and mission, but I also want to bring my spirituality to my relationships outside of religious life, including with those who practice a different faith tradition or who have no religious practice at all. Among these relationships, I can still touch upon my relationship with God through questions around how we discover wonder in the world, how we are called to practice kindness and compassion, and awareness of the needs of our times. In the end, my relationship with others is richer because of my relationship with God, and my relationship with God is deeper because of the relationships that I have with others.

La Amistad y la Vida Espiritual

Muchas de nosotras tuvimos la experiencia de tener una mejor amiga durante nuestra infancia. Recuerdo ir a pedir dulces en Halloween o pasar la noche con mi mejor amiga en la primaria. Lo que más me emocionaba era la conexión que sentía con ella y todo lo que aprendíamos la una de la otra. Esas mismas cualidades que me unieron tanto a mi mejor amiga de la infancia son las que hoy aplico en mi relación con Dios.

La amistad con Dios es algo que aprendí durante mi período de formación con las Hermanas Domínicas de Adrian. Cuando pensamos de nuestra relación con Dios como una amistad, podemos empezar a comprender la reciprocidad a la que esta relación nos llama. Dios es generoso con nosotras de muchas maneras, y nosotras también aportamos algo a esta relación cuando nos permitimos ser vulnerables y abiertas a Él. Esta vulnerabilidad se manifiesta al confesar nuestros errores, pero también al discernir con honestidad los deseos de nuestro corazón.

Nuestra relación con Dios no se puede separar de nuestra relación con las demás. Cuando tengo dificultades en mis relaciones en general, mi relación con Dios también se siente más distante y complicada. Cuando encuentro momentos de cercanía y conexión con las que me rodean, me resulta más fácil sentirme conectada con Dios. Significativamente, muchos santos cultivaron amistades en las que su relación con Dios los unía, y exploraban esa relación en sus conversaciones para profundizar tanto su vínculo con Dios como entre ellos.

Mis relaciones con mis compañeras son diferentes ahora que en segundo grado, cuando el recreo era una gran oportunidad para socializar. Parte de la madurez a la que he sido llamada es preguntarme cómo Dios puede formar parte de mis relaciones con las demás. Dentro de mi comunidad religiosa, las conversaciones muchas veces tienen que ver con la espiritualidad y la misión, pero también quiero llevar mi espiritualidad a mis relaciones fuera de la vida religiosa, incluso con aquellas que practican una tradición religiosa diferente o que no tienen ninguna práctica religiosa. En estas relaciones, aún puedo conectar con mi relación con Dios a través de preguntas sobre cómo descubrimos la maravilla en el mundo, cómo somos llamadas a practicar la bondad y la compasión, y la conciencia de las necesidades de nuestro tiempo. En fin, mi relación con las demás es más rica gracias a mi relación con Dios, y mi relación con Dios es más profunda gracias a las relaciones que tengo con las demás.
