Today we reflect on a past post from Sister Mary.

When I was a little kid, I wanted to play tennis, but I struggled with my serve. My dad told me the importance of practicing. He suggested starting small, first with the toss, then footwork, then a week or two later, the strike, and finally the follow-through. Focusing on each small part allowed me to improve the small skills which brought together the overall skill. After lots of practice, my serve and overall play improved immensely. By high school I was a ranked player in my state. 

The same strategy can help with developing the skills of discernment. Getting comfortable with the little things helps lead to the larger and longer practice. When I practiced my toss, it wasn’t just on the court, I carried a tennis ball around and would practice my toss anywhere. Listening for God’s voice takes practice, and there are a few skills that need developing. Becoming comfortable with quiet is important, but it takes practice. Just like practicing my toss everywhere and anywhere, try practicing comfort in the quiet in different times and places in your life. In the car, on a walk, or sitting in the sun one can develop the skill, the gift of becoming comfortable in the quiet. To take on discernment as a deliberate practice, practice entering into conversation with God about the little things in your life, before the big things. 

Practice learning to listen – not just for God, but really listening to others. God may not speak to you like he speaks to others. Don't expect to be able to hear immediately if you've never listened before, it takes practice, and the practice is worth it.

La Práctica Hace La Perfección

Cuando era pequeña, quería jugar al tenis, pero tenía problemas con mi servir. Mi papá me decía la importancia de practicar, mucho. Sugirió comenzar poco a poco, primero con el lanzamiento, luego el juego de los pies, luego, una semana o dos más tarde, el golpe y finalmente el seguimiento. Centrándome en cada pequeña parte me permitió mejorar las pequeñas habilidades que unieron la habilidad general. Después de mucha práctica, mi servir y mi juego en general mejoraron enormemente, de modo que en la escuela secundaria era una jugadora clasificada en mi estado. 

La misma estrategia puede ayudar a desarrollar las habilidades de discernimiento. Sentirse cómoda con las pequeñas cosas ayuda a guiarnos a la práctica más grande y más larga. Cuando practicaba mi lanzamiento, no era solo en la cancha, llevaba una pelota de tenis y practicaba mi lanzamiento en cualquier lugar. Escuchar la voz de Dios requiere práctica, y hay algunas habilidades que necesitan desarrollarse Sentirse cómoda con el silencio es importante, pero requiere práctica. Al igual que practicar mi lanzamiento en todas partes y en cualquier lugar, intente practicar estar cómoda en el silencio en diferentes momentos y lugares de su vida. En el automóvil, en un paseo o sentada en el sol, uno puede desarrollar la habilidad, el don de sentirse cómoda en el silencio. Para asumir el discernimiento como una práctica deliberada, practique entrar en conversación con Dios sobre las cosas pequeñas de su vida, antes que las cosas grandes.

Practique aprender a escuchar – no solamente por Dios, sino realmente escuchar a las demás. Puede ser que Dios no le hable como le habla a las demás. No espere necesariamente poder escuchar de inmediato si nunca ha escuchado antes, se necesita práctica y la práctica vale la pena.
