Radical Joy
What does it mean to live with joy in a world that seems determined to focus on all the things that are evil and morally wrong? Reading or watching the news, I feel my heart break as I see images of war and armed conflict, and I am deeply moved by the suffering that so many face day to day. In the face of so much that is wrong, seeking out joy seems foolish or immature.
However, joy is considered a gift of the Holy Spirit in the Catholic tradition with a divine origin, and it isn’t something that should be dismissed as having no purpose. For Christians, part of the power of joy is that it shows that death and evil will not win in the end.
The power of joy is most obvious in our Easter celebration. The crucifixion of Jesus shows the profound injustice in the world, where a blameless victim is executed while Barrabas, an insurrectionist, walks free. Yet, in the resurrection, that injustice is reversed, and Jesus conquers death. On Easter morning, Christians are joyful in the full knowledge that bad things happen and that there is hope that all our suffering will end.
Joy then becomes an act of resistance, because it is refusing to let the evil of the world control us. In a world where some people want to make others suffer, being joyful is a reminder that what matters most is our relationship with God, who loves and delights in us. True joy does not dismiss the suffering in the world but affirms that God will draw close to those in pain, wipe away every tear, and lift up the lowly.
I wish you joy during this Easter Season, and I hope that the joy that you carry will bring joy to others, especially those in greatest need.
