The Dominican Family

When I was first discerning, I was aware of individual congregations. I knew, for example, that the Adrian Dominican Sisters were a separate congregation from other congregations of Dominican Sisters, just like there were many congregations of Franciscan sisters or Benedictine communities. However, what I did not know at the time was the connections that I would form with members from other congregations who were also part of the Dominican Order.

We often use the term “Dominican Family” when we talk about how the Dominican Order is made from many different parts, including friars, apostolic sisters, nuns, lay Dominicans, associates, and Dominican Young Adults. The term often shows us how much we recognize the contributions of each of these groups to how we understand our calling to be part of the Dominican tradition. In addition to this interpretation, one of the most meaningful ways that I have experienced Dominican Family is my connections with my fellow apostolic sisters who belong to different congregations.

As a younger sister, I don’t have as many age peers in my own congregation. I am so grateful that I can reach out to sisters who are close to my age in congregations around the country. So often, we are going through similar experiences, whether seeing sisters we have loved pass away, trying to balance community life and ministry, and being called to serve our communities in different ways. As a result, there is a circle of friendship among us, and I have the joy of attending their profession ceremonies, and I delight in connecting with my circle at different events.

I attended a women’s college, and when I talk about my experience at Saint Mary’s College, I say that I did not attend my college because it was a women’s college, but when I graduated, it was one of my favorite aspects of my experience. I feel the same way about my experience of the Dominican Family. I did not choose to join the Adrian Dominican Sisters because of the Dominican Family, but it was a part of my experience for which I am deeply grateful. My experience of the Dominican Family continues to broaden my perspective, challenge me, and provides me with abundant hope.

La Familia Domínica

Al principio de mi discernimiento, tenía conocimiento de diferentes congregaciones. Sabía, por ejemplo, que las Hermanas Domínicas de Adrian eran una congregación distinta de otras congregaciones de Hermanas Domínicas, al igual que existen muchas congregaciones de hermanas Franciscanas o comunidades Benedictinas. Sin embargo, lo que desconocía en ese momento eran las conexiones que establecería con miembros de otras congregaciones que también formaban parte de la Orden Domínica.

Muchas veces usamos el término "Familia Domínica" cuando hablamos de cómo la Orden Domínica está compuesta por diferentes partes, incluyendo frailes, hermanas apostólicas, monjas, laicos Domínicos, asociados y Jóvenes Adultos Domínicos. El término muchas veces nos muestra cuánto reconocemos las contribuciones de cada uno de estos grupos a nuestra comprensión de nuestro llamado a ser parte de la tradición dominicana. Además de esta interpretación, una de las maneras más significativas en que he experimentado la Familia Dominicana es en mis relaciones con mis hermanas apostólicas que pertenecen a diferentes congregaciones.

Como una hermana joven, no tengo muchas hermanas de mi edad en mi congregación. Estoy muy agradecida de poder conectar con hermanas de mi edad en congregaciones en todo el país. Muchas veces, pasamos por experiencias similares, ya sea al ver fallecer a hermanas que amábamos, intentar conciliar la vida comunitaria y el ministerio, o al ser llamadas a servir a nuestras comunidades de diferentes maneras. Como resultado, existe un círculo de amistad entre nosotras, y tengo la alegría de asistir a sus ceremonias de profesión, y me alegro en conectar con mi círculo en diferentes eventos.

Asistí a una universidad femenina, y cuando hablo de mi experiencia en Saint Mary's College, digo que no asistí a mi universidad por ser una universidad femenina, pero que, al graduarme, eso fue uno de los aspectos más favoritos de me experiencia. Siento lo mismo sobre mi experiencia con la Familia Domínica. No elegí unirme a las Hermanas Domínicas de Adrian por la Familia Domínica, sino que fue una parte de mi experiencia por la que estoy profundamente agradecida. Mi experiencia con la Familia Domínica continúa ampliando mi perspectiva, me reta y me da abundante esperanza.
