The First Novena

In the Catholic faith, the time between the Ascension of Jesus and Pentecost is a sacred period of waiting, prayer, and hope. After rising from the dead, Christ remained with His disciples for forty days, teaching and preparing them. At the Ascension, He returned to the Father, but not as an act of absence or abandonment. Instead, He promised to send the Holy Spirit, who would strengthen and guide the Church.

This left the apostles in a unique moment: they had seen the risen Lord, yet they had not fully understood what came next. Catholic tradition sees these days as the Church’s first novena, the original nine days of prayer that took place as the apostles, together with the Blessed Virgin Mary, as they remained in Jerusalem awaiting the coming of the Holy Spirit. During this time, they were not idle. They prayed with trust, remained united, and prepared their hearts for God’s next great gift.

Spiritually, this period teaches Catholics how to live in times of uncertainty. The apostles did not know exactly how the promise would be fulfilled, but they stayed faithful. Their waiting became fruitful because it was rooted in prayer. For Catholics today, the days between Ascension and Pentecost are an invitation to deepen dependence on God, to pray for the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and to grow in readiness for mission. Pentecost then becomes not only a feast of the past, but the fulfillment of a living promise. The waiting after the Ascension reminds believers that God often forms God’s people in silence, expectation, and prayer before sending them out in strength. In that sense, these days are a model of Christian discipleship: trusting, praying, and preparing for the grace God is about to give.

I remember my Irish granny had a fondness for the praying of a novena; she taught me about the first novena and how important it was to spend time in prayer, especially if I was troubled about something. During the summer of my tenth year, she and I prayed a novena together for my cousin who had been in an accident. At the end of the nine days, my cousin was released from the hospital. As a woman religious, I find the novena very calming and a reminder of the goodness of God. The lesson of childhood is something I always remember when I feel overwhelmed: take it to prayer.

La primera novena

En la fe Católica, el tiempo entre la Ascensión de Jesús y Pentecostés es un período sagrado de espera, oración y esperanza. Tras resucitar, Cristo permaneció con sus discípulos durante cuarenta días, enseñándoles y preparándolos. En la Ascensión, regresó al Padre, pero no como un acto de ausencia o abandono. Al contrario, El prometió enviar al Espíritu Santo, quien fortalecería y guiaría a la Iglesia.

Esto dejó a los apóstoles en un momento único: ellos habían visto al Señor resucitado, pero aún no comprendían todo lo que vendría después. La tradición Católica considera estos días como la primera novena de la Iglesia, los nueve días originales de oración que los apóstoles, junto con la Santísima Virgen María, mientras permanecían en Jerusalén esperando la venida del Espíritu Santo. Durante este tiempo, no estuvieron ociosos. Oraron con fe, permanecieron unidos y prepararon sus corazones para el siguiente gran don de Dios.

Espiritualmente, este periodo le enseña a los Católicos cómo vivir en tiempos de incertidumbre. Los apóstoles no sabían con exactitud cómo se cumpliría la promesa, pero permanecieron fieles. Su espera fue fructífera porque estaba arraigada en la oración. Para los Católicos de hoy, los días entre la Ascensión y Pentecostés son una invitación a profundizar la dependencia en Dios, a orar por los dones del Espíritu Santo y a prepararse para la misión. Pentecostés se convierte entonces no tan solo en una fiesta del pasado, sino en el cumplimiento de una promesa viva. La espera después de la Ascensión le recuerda a los creyentes que Dios muchas veces forma a su pueblo en silencio, expectación y oración antes de enviarlo fortalecido. En ese sentido, estos días son un modelo de discipulado Cristiano: confiar, orar y prepararse para la gracia que Dios está a punto de conceder.

Recuerdo que mi abuela Irlandesa tenía devoción por rezar la novena; me enseñó sobre la primera novena y la importancia de dedicar tiempo a la oración, especialmente si algo me preocupaba. Durante el verano de mi décimo año, ella y yo rezamos juntas una novena por mi primo, que había sufrido un accidente. A lo último de los nueve días, le dieron de alta del hospital a mi primo. Como mujer religiosa, encuentro una calma en la novena y un recordatorio de la bondad de Dios. La lección de mi infancia es algo que siempre recuerdo cuando me siento abrumada: recurrir a la oración.

Que aproveche este tiempo especial entre la Ascensión y Pentecostés como una oportunidad para dedicar más tiempo a la oración.
