Looking at the liturgical calendar for the month of August, I cannot help but reflect upon the lives of the many great women and men who have touched countless people across the globe over many centuries. Among the saints whose feasts are commemorated this month we find: two married women, two married kings, two doctors of the church, three popes, and seven founders of religious orders. Among this list were bishops, martyrs, presbyters, and a variety of other individuals.

In reading just a little about most of these saints, what struck me was how many of them, be they lay, married, religious, or clerics, were dedicated to improving the lives of people who were among the most vulnerable in their social circles: children, the hungry, the impoverished, the sick, the uneducated. Often, these men and women risked being ousted from their families and/or communities for performing works of charity.

Having become more conscious of the handful of saints we remember this month, I offer you a few questions for your own reflection.

• How do I hear the words of the Gospel?
• What does God invite me to be and do for the most vulnerable in my community? In the world?
• How do I live the Gospel?

Somos el Cuerpo de Cristo

Mirando el calendario litúrgico para el mes de agosto, no puedo evitar reflexionar sobre las vidas de muchas mujeres y hombres importantes que han tocado a innumerables personas en todo el mundo durante muchos siglos. Entre los santos cuyas fiestas se conmemoran este mes encontramos: dos mujeres casadas, dos reyes casados, dos doctores de la iglesia, tres papas y siete fundadores de órdenes religiosas. Entre esta lista había obispos, mártires, presbíteros y una variedad de otras personas.

Al leer un poco sobre la mayoría de estos santos, lo que me llamó la atención fue cuántos de ellos, ya sean laicos, casados, religiosos o clérigos, se dedicaron a mejorar la vida de las personas que se encontraban entre los más vulnerables de su círculo social: los niños, los hambrientos, los empobrecidos, los enfermos, los sin educación. A menudo, estos hombres y mujeres corrían el riesgo de ser expulsados de sus familias y/o comunidades por realizar obras de caridad.

Habiéndome vuelto más consciente del puñado de santos que recordamos este mes, les ofrezco algunas preguntas para su propia reflexión.

• ¿Cómo escucho las palabras del Evangelio?
• ¿A qué me invita Dios a ser y hacer por los más vulnerables de mi comunidad? ¿En el mundo?
• ¿Cómo vivo el Evangelio?
