During our Come and See Retreat, Sister Patty Harvat gave a talk about Dominican Spirituality. She told her listeners that one of the things that define Dominicans is the willingness to be true to oneself. So often, we can be caught up in what we think we should be, rather than focusing on who we are. For Dominicans, being honest with ourselves is one way we express the virtue of Veritas, or Truth, and witness to the Truth of God. Knowing who we are though takes work and willingness to be vulnerable with ourselves. Asking questions such as “what are my gifts?” or “where are my areas of growth?” take time and energy to answer. 

Knowing who we are helps us to enter into discernment fully and honestly. Knowing our limitations helps us to be aware when something might not be a good fit or if something is an invitation to stretch ourselves. Knowing our gifts helps us to identify where we can bring our best selves. The most helpful part in discernment is that when we know who we truly are, it becomes easier to identify the voice of God. God’s voice is always calling us to be the person God created us to be, and when we are true to ourselves, we grow closer to that original vision. As you reflect on how you can be true to yourself and to know the truth of yourself, I invite you to use these questions to help you: 

•    Where do I feel most myself? 
•    What brings me joy and makes me feel alive? 
•    Where am I called to learn more about others and myself?

¡Sea Sincera Consigo Misma!

Durante nuestro retiro Ven y Ve, la Hermana Patty Harvat dió una plática sobre la Espiritualidad Domínica. Le dijo a sus oyentes que una de las cosas que define a las Domínicas es la voluntad de ser fiel a si misma. Muchas veces nos enredarmos en lo que creemos que deberíamos ser, en ves de de enforcarnos en lo que somos. Para las Domínicas, ser honestas con nosotras mismas es una forma de expresar la virtud de Veritas, o Verdad, y dar testimonio de la Verdad de Dios. Sin embargo, saber quiénes somos requiere trabajo y voluntad de ser vulnerables con nosotras mismas. Hacer preguntas como "¿cuáles son mis dones?" o "¿dónde están mis áreas de crecimiento?" tome tiempo y energía para responder.

Saber quiénes somos nos ayuda a entrar plenamente y honestamente en el discernimiento.  Conocer nuestras limitaciones nos ayuda a ser conscientes de cuándo algo podría no encajar bien o si algo es una invitación a esforzarnos. Conocer nuestros dones nos ayuda a identificar dónde podemos aportar lo mejor de nosotras mismas. La parte más útil del discernimiento es que cuando sabemos quiénes somos realmente, resulta más fácil identificar la voz de Dios. La voz de Dios siempre nos llama a ser la persona para la que Dios nos creó, y cuando somos fieles a nosotras mismas, nos acercamos más a esa visión original. Mientras reflexione sobre cómo puede ser fiel a si misma y conocer la verdad sobre si misma, la invito a utilizar estas preguntas para ayudarle:

• ¿Dónde me siento más yo misma?
• ¿Qué me trae alegría y me hace sentir viva?
• ¿Dónde soy llamada a aprender más sobre las demás y sobre mí misma?

It’s so much easier to have a sense of purpose in life when we’re part of something bigger than ourselves. It’s the reason programs like AmeriCorps, Habitat for Humanity, Catholic Lay Missioners, Peace Corps, Dominican Volunteers, and many others thrive. When the time of volunteer work is finished, people treasure what they experienced. The work is hard, often far away from home and yet provides experiences like no other. 

I believe one of the elements that makes the volunteer experience valuable is what we learn about extending ourselves beyond our normal range of giving. In a sense we belong forever to the experience and to the people and needs we responded to.

Now imagine having that experience with your whole life! Imagine committing yourself with others in a religious community to make an impact on the challenges facing people. It is hard work. It often takes us far from what is familiar. The call of God to meet the needs of God’s people who otherwise may not have their needs responded to is gratifying in itself. It creates an inner joy in realizing the promise of Jesus in the Gospel, “whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” (Matthew 25:40) Such a privilege!

Together, Sisters ponder the world’s needs and then together respond to them in answer to God’s call. How about you? Is God calling you to respond along with others as a Dominican Sister?

Ofreciendo Su Vida

Es mucho más fácil tener un sentido de propósito en la vida cuando somos parte de algo más grande que nosotras. Es la razón por la cual prosperan programas como AmeriCorps, Hábitat para la Humanidad, Catholic Lay Missioners - Misioneros Laicos Católicos, Peace Corps, Voluntarias Domínicas, y muchos otros. Cuando termina el tiempo del trabajo voluntario, las personas atesoran lo que experimentaron. El trabajo es duro, muchas veces lejos de casa y, sin embargo, proporciona experiencias como ninguna otra.

Creo que uno de los elementos que hace que la experiencia de la voluntaria sea valiosa es el hecho de extendernos más allá de lo normal. En cierto sentido, pertenecemos para siempre a la experiencia y a las personas y necesidades a las que hemos respondido. 

¡Ahora imagine tener esa experiencia con toda su vida! Comprometerse con otras en una comunidad religiosa para tener un impacto en los desafíos que enfrentan las personas es una experiencia muy gratificante. Es un trabajo arduo. Muchas veces nos lleva lejos de lo que es familiar. El llamado de Dios para responder a las necesidades de las personas de Dios a las que de otra manera no se les respondería es gratificante en sí mismo. Crea un gozo interno al cumplir la promesa de Jesús en el Evangelio: "lo que hiciste por uno de los hermanos y hermanas míos más pequeños, lo hiciste por mí." (Mateo 25:40) ¡Qué privilegio!

Juntas, las hermanas reflexionan sobre cuáles son las necesidades y luego juntas responden a ellas en respuesta al llamado de Dios. ¿Qué ta lusted? ¿La está llamando Dios a responder junta con otras como una Hermana Domínica?
