What is National Vocation Awareness Week?

National Vocation Awareness Week (NVAW) is an annual week-long celebration of the Catholic Church in the United States dedicated to promoting vocations to consecrated life and ordained ministry through prayer and education, and to renew our prayers and support for women and men who are considering one of these vocations. This year, we celebrate NVAW November 6-12, 2022.

Observance of Vocation Awareness Week began in 1976 when the U.S. bishops designated the 28th Sunday of the year for the celebration. In 2014, the Committee on Clergy, Consecrated Life and Vocations moved the observance of National Vocation Awareness Week to November to encourage participation from Catholic schools and colleges in this effort.

¿Qué es la Semana Nacional por las Vocaciones? 

La Semana Nacional de Concienciación Vocacional (NVAW) es una celebración anual de una semana de duración de la Iglesia Católica en los Estados Unidos dedicada a promover las vocaciones a la vida consagrada y al ministerio sacerdotal a través de la oración y la educación, y a continuar apoyando a las mujeres y hombres que están considerando una de estas vocaciones.

La Semana de Concienciación Vocacional se inició en 1976 cuando los obispos de los Estados Unidos designaron el 28º domingo del año para su celebración. En 2014, el Comité de Clero, Vida Consagrada y Vocaciones trasladó la celebración a noviembre para alentar la participación de las escuelas y colegios católicos.

We are celebrating National Vocation Awareness Week, November 4-10, which was established by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Our events this week will be in support of parish efforts to foster a culture of vocations for the consecrated life, priesthood, and the deaconate.

In his message for the 2018 World Day of Vocations, Pope Francis emphasized that it is at the loving initiative of God, and personal encounter with each of us, that a person is called. God knows our anxious longing for love and calls us to joy. In the diversity and the uniqueness of each and every vocation, personal and ecclesial, there is a need to listen, discern and live this word that calls to us. 

Each day this week we will post one “myth” about religious life and have a “live” response from one of our Sisters, which will be posted on our social media. We’re calling the series “Myth-busters.”
