While enjoying a visit with a friend recently, I mentioned several “tasks” that needed completion before I felt I could enjoy the holidays. Baking, making chocolate, and decorating for Christmas have always been things that I’ve loved to do, and that I wanted to do instead of attending to several “responsibilities” that begged for my attention. Sara shared with me the above quotation of Meister Eckhart and said that she often calls these words to mind when she has work that takes priority over what she would prefer to be doing.

Wisdom consists in doing the next thing you have to do, doing it with your whole heart, and finding delight in doing it.

I had never heard this quotation before Sara shared it with me, and I’m not certain that I really “like” it. It is certainly a new way for me to consider “wisdom.” In the past, I’ve thought of wisdom as living life well, as knowing how to make good choices in a variety of situations. Upon rereading and reflecting upon Eckhart’s quotation, perhaps his definition is not so far from how I have considered wisdom. But it certainly expands my previous understanding and it challenges me to look at responsibilities (especially those I’m not fond of doing) very differently.

What a difference Eckhart’s perception of wisdom could make in my life, in your life! What if we each chose to do “the next thing” we need to do “with our whole heart” and found “delight in doing it?”

Mientras disfrutaba de una visita de una amiga recientemente, mencioné varias “tareas” que debían completarse antes de sentir que podía disfrutar de las vacaciones. Cocinar al horno, hacer chocolate y decorar para Navidad siempre han sido cosas que me han encantado hacer y que quería hacer en lugar de atender varias “responsabilidades” que pedían mi atención. Sara compartió conmigo la cita anterior de Meister Eckhart y dijo que muchas veces recuerda estas palabras cuando tiene un trabajo que toma prioridad sobre lo que preferiría hacer.

Nunca había escuchado esta cita antes de que Sara la compartiera conmigo y no estoy segura de que realmente me “guste”. Sin duda, para mí es una nueva forma de considerar la “sabiduría”. En el pasado, pensaba que la sabiduría significaba vivir bien la vida, saber tomar buenas decisiones en una variedad de situaciones. Al releer y reflexionar sobre la cita de Eckhart, quizás su definición no esté tan alejada de cómo yo he considerado la sabiduría. Pero ciertamente amplía mi comprensión anterior y me desafía a considerar las responsabilidades (especialmente aquellas que no me gustan) de manera muy diferente.

¡Qué diferencia podría hacer la percepción de la sabiduría de Eckhart en mi vida y en su vida! ¿Qué pasaría si cada una de nosotras decidiera hacer “la próxima cosa” que debemos hacer “con todo nuestro corazón” y encontráramos “deleite al hacerlo”?
