Today’s gospel is of the Visitation, one of my favorite scripture passages. The joy of Elizabeth and Mary together and Elizabeth’s child recognizing the God within Mary. The Visitation always brings me back to one of the major moments in my vocation discernment. Mary went to Elizabeth, knowing she was a wise woman who would understand. One of the wisest and most spiritual people I know was my older cousin Mark. One evening while praying about my vocation, it came to me that I should share my discernment with Mark. I knew he would give me an honest appraisal as to the seriousness of my journey and might share some of his wisdom. So, I called him up that night and went to see him. I was nervous, wondering what he might say. What if he thought religious life wasn’t the path for me? It turned out the exact opposite was true. I told him about my vocation journey, and he looked me in the eye and said, “I’ve seen a vocation for religious life in you for a long time. I’ve just been waiting for you to find it.” He and I both were filled with such joy at that moment, I can still feel that joy over 20 years later. Mark continued to be one of my strongest advocates, and I am so grateful for his love and support through this very special time in my life. Who is your Elizabeth?

Una Visita Como Parte De La Jornada

El evangelio de hoy es el de la Visitación, uno de mis pasajes bíblicos favoritos. La alegría de Elizabeth y María juntas y el reconocimiento del hijo de Elizabeth al Dios dentro de María. La Visitación me recuerda siempre de uno de los momentos más importantes de mi discernimiento vocacional. María acudió a Elizabeth sabiendo que era una mujer sabia que entendería. Una de las personas más sabias y espirituales que conozco fue mi primo mayor, Mark. Una tarde, mientras oraba por mi vocación, se me ocurrió que debía compartir mi discernimiento con Mark. Sabía que él me daría una evaluación honesta sobre la seriedad de mi jornada y podría compartir algo de su sabiduría. Así que, lo llamé esa noche y fui a verlo. Estaba nerviosa, preguntándome qué diría, ¿y si pensara que la vida religiosa no era el camino para mí? Resultó que era exactamente lo contrario. Le conté sobre mi camino vocacional, me miró a los ojos y me dijo: “He visto en ti una vocación a la vida religiosa durante mucho tiempo, solo he estado esperando que la encontraras”. Él y yo estábamos llenos de tanta alegría en ese momento que todavía puedo sentir esa alegría más de 20 años después. Mark siguió siendo uno de mis más firmes defensores y estoy muy agradecida por su amor y apoyo durante este momento tan especial de mi vida. ¿Quién es su Elizabeth?

“They are like a tree planted near running water that yields its fruit in due season and whose leaves never fade.” (Psalm 1:3)

In this Season of Lent we can imagine the 40 days as a container of time for sinking our roots into prayer where we listen to and speak with God in our hearts. As Psalm One reminds us our connection to God is “like trees planted near water” for our refreshment, nourishment, development, and flourishing. This is God’s desire for us.

In the midst of discerning a call of God for our lives, imagine the water washing away doubts and replacing them with the wisdom that comes from God to nourish our heart’s desire and God’s desire for us. God is never outdone in the generosity given to us freely. 

This Lent, why not promise yourself the quiet and prayer time for listening to the longings of your heart and God’s longing for you. May these 40 days be filled with the silence needed to discern and the grace of insights needed to arrive where both you and God want you to live out your Baptismal call.

Agua Que Fluye

"Son como un árbol plantado cerca del agua corriente que produce su fruto a su debido tiempo y cuyas hojas nunca se desvanecen." (Salmo 1:3)

En esta temporada de Cuaresma podemos imaginar los 40 días como un contenedor de tiempo para hundir nuestras raíces en la oración donde escuchamos y hablamos con Dios en nuestros corazones. Como el Salmo Uno nos recuerda que nuestra conexión con Dios es "como árboles plantados cerca del agua" para nuestro refrigerio, alimento, desarrollo, y florecimiento. Este es el deseo de Dios para nosotras.

En medio de discernir un llamado de Dios para nuestras vidas, imagine que el agua lava las dudas y las reemplaza con la sabiduría que proviene de Dios para nutrir el deseo de nuestro corazón y el deseo de Dios por nosotras. Dios nunca es superado en la generosidad que se nos da libremente.

Esta Cuaresma, ¿por qué no se promete a usted misma el tiempo tranquilo y de oración para escuchar los anhelos de su corazón y el anhelo de Dios para usted? Que estos 40 días se llenen del silencio necesario para discernir y la gracia de las ideas necesarias para llegar a donde usted y Dios desea que viva su llamado bautismal.

In our U.S. culture we place a strong value on the individual – some would say an over-value on it. One of the consequences is that we begin to believe we have to do things all alone, all by ourselves; that there is something wrong with us if we ask for someone else’s help.

This is especially true when we are discerning what to do with our lives and how we can live out our life’s purpose. In other words, how does God want us to live and share our God-given gifts with others? The answer to this question is not easy, often complex. Because seeking the answer for ourselves is so complex we need the help of others to come upon the solution. There is no shame is seeking help.

Mentors can help. They are people who have experience in living, whose own life path shows they have taken seriously their baptismal call to follow God’s path toward becoming the person God created them to be. This could be someone who has the education and training as a spiritual director or accompaniment. It could be someone around us who exhibits a quality of life that appeals to us and who would be honored to listen to our questions and share ways they went about their own search for the answer in their lives. 

The important thing is we feel there is someone with us on the journey as at least a sounding board and who may be able to guide us at certain points, challenge our choices but also support us in our search.

We also can trust the Holy Spirit to be with us as we listen with our hearts and respond to God’s whispers within us. May you find that personal support for your life discernment!

Pidiendo Ayuda

En nuestra cultura estadounidense le damos un gran valor al individuo – algunos dirían un sobrevalor en ello. Una de las consecuencias es que comenzamos a creer que tenemos que hacer las cosas por sí mismas, completamente solas; que hay algo mal en nosotras si pedimos la ayuda de otra persona.

Esto es especialmente cierto cuando estamos discerniendo qué hacer con nuestras vidas y cómo podemos vivir el propósito de nuestra vida. En otras palabras, ¿cómo quiere Dios que vivamos y compartamos nuestros dones dados por Dios con las demás? La respuesta a esta pregunta no es fácil, a menudo compleja. Porque buscar la respuesta para nosotras es tan complejo que necesitamos la ayuda de otras para encontrar la solución. No hay vergüenza es buscar ayuda.

Las mentores pueden ayudar. Son personas que tienen experiencia en la vida, cuyo propio camino de vida muestra que han tomado en serio su llamado bautismal a seguir el camino de Dios para convertirse en la persona que Dios las creó a ser. Puede ser alguien que tenga la educación y capacitación como directora o acompañante espiritual. Podría ser alguien a nuestro alrededor que exhiba una calidad de vida que nos atraiga y que se sienta honrada de escuchar nuestras preguntas y compartir las formas en que ellas buscaron la respuesta en sus vidas.

Lo importante es que sintamos que hay alguien con nosotras en el viaje como al menos una caja de resonancia y que pueda guiarnos en ciertos tiempos, desafiar nuestras decisiones pero también apoyarnos en nuestra búsqueda.

También podemos confiar en que el Espíritu Santo estará con nosotras mientras escuchamos con nuestros corazones y respondemos a los susurros de Dios dentro de nosotras. ¡Que encuentre ese apoyo personal para el discernimiento de su vida!

Conversación de discernimiento: ¿Dios tiene un plan para nosotros?

If you happened to be watching the Superbowl last Sunday as I was with friends, you may have had a similar insight to the one that came to me. It was the commitment the 24-year-old Kansas City quarterback made to winning that game for his team. Actually, it was most evident in the last part of the last quarter of the game, but it was stunning to watch how seemingly all of a sudden he was able to connect with passes to his receivers downfield when those connections had been missed a number of times earlier in the game.

Of course, it got me thinking about how commitment to our calling in our life requires the same kind of focus, the identical concentration of our energies in order to fulfill our own dream and call. When we’re in the midst of trying to figure out our future and enter into discernment, whether formal or informal, we are often surprised at the time, energy, and patience required. We are surprised it’s not as simple as choosing college courses or getting assignments in on time. It also involves our imaginations.

Imagining ourselves in five or ten years in the future, we see where and how we’ll be living. However, to get from the present to that desired future will take commitment of our life’s energy, our prayer, our time, and our skills. God chooses and it’s not always obvious why God chooses us to live our call in religious life. It’s not unlike the young quarterback who made a commitment – he said “yes!” – inside himself and then went for it wholeheartedly!

Compromiso – ¡Sí!

Si por casualidad estuvo viendo el Superbowl el Domingo pasado como yo lo estaba hacienda con mis amigas, es posible que haya tenido una idea similar a la que me llegó. Fue el compromiso que el “Quarterback” de Kansas City de 24 años de edad tenia por ganar ese juego para su equipo. En realidad, fue más evidente en la última parte del último cuarto del juego, pero fue impresionante ver cómo, de repente, pudo conectarse con pases a sus receptores en el equipo cuando al principio del juego se habían perdido esas conexiones. 

Por supuesto, me hizo pensar en cómo el compromiso a nuestro llamado en nuestra vida requiere el mismo tipo de enfoque, la concentración idéntica de nuestras energías para cumplir nuestro propio sueño y llamado. Cuando estamos tratando de descubrir nuestro futuro y entrar en discernimiento, ya sea formal o informal, muchas veces nos sorprende el tiempo, la energía, y la paciencia que se require. Nos sorprende que no sea tan sencillo como elegir cursos universitarios o entregar tareas a tiempo. También involucra nuestra imaginación.

Al imaginarnos como seremos en cinco o diez años en el futuro, vemos dónde y cómo viviremos. Sin embargo, para pasar del presente a ese futuro deseado, será necesario comprometer la energía de nuestra vida, nuestra oración, nuestro tiempo y nuestras habilidades. Dios elige y no siempre es obvio por qué Dios nos elige para vivir nuestro llamado en la vida religiosa. No es diferente al joven “Quarterback” que se comprometió – el dijo "¡sí!" – dentro de sí mismo y luego lo hizo de todo corazón!

Jesus is right at the center of the call for our lives. Just as the four newly-invited disciples in the Gospel for this past Sunday were tending their nets and going about their ordinary, daily lives, they found themselves leaving everything behind to follow Jesus’ invitation. It was amazing the influence Jesus had!

But wait a minute. Jesus still has that ability to draw us. He still calls women and men to follow him as disciples, proclaiming the goodness of God’s love to the whole world. Have you heard the call? Do you quiet yourself enough so you can hear the call deep in your heart? Do you sense that you are being called, but are not sure what it means and how to follow that call?

A wonderful way to discern what your call is for your life is to find a mentor or spiritual director who can listen to how God may already be speaking to you, help you pay attention to that small voice inside. This is a way to become clear that, yes, God loves you and wants you to come and help spread this good news of God’s love and concern to many other people.

Él Cambió Sus Corazones

Jesús está justo en el centro del llamado a nuestras vidas. Así como los cuatro discípulos recién invitados en el Evangelio del Domingo pasado estaban cuidando sus redes y llevando a cabo sus vidas cotidianas, se encontraron dejando todo para seguir la invitación de Jesús. ¡Fue sorprendente la influencia que Jesús tuvo!

Pero espera un minuto. Jesús todavía tiene esa capacidad de atraernos. Todavía llama a mujeres y hombres a seguirlo como discípulos, proclamando la bondad del amor de Dios para todo el mundo. ¿Has escuchado el llamado? ¿Tomas tiempo lo suficiente en silencio para poder escuchar el llamado en lo profundo de tu corazón? ¿Sientes que estás siendo llamada, pero no estás segura de lo que significa y cómo seguir ese llamado?

Una manera maravillosa de discernir cuál es su llamado para su vida es encontrar un mentor o una Directora Espiritual que pueda escuchar cómo Dios ya te podrá estar hablando, te ayude a prestar atención a esa pequeña voz interior. Esta es una manera de aclarar que, sí, Dios te ama y quiere que vengas y ayudes a difundir esta buena noticia del amor y la preocupación de Dios a muchas otras personas.

While we have in the Gospel an image of God’s Spirit appearing as a dove at Jesus’ Baptism, we don’t have that as the only image. 

In reality, the presence of the Holy Spirit is more often felt and experienced than seen with our eyes. When we have an insight or inspiration, we attribute that to the Spirit. When disparate things effortlessly come together, we may acknowledge, the Spirit brought it to completion. St. Paul tells us that the Spirit is experienced as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, forbearance, modesty, chastity, and self-control. 

Let’s take just one of those experiences for our purposes in discernment: patience. We need the Spirit’s help in being patient because discerning takes energy, consuming our attention at some stages. It might even cause us discomfort and frustration. Patience with the time it takes to discover and claim our desires for our lives and the Spirit’s desire for us is a gift of the Spirit.

May each of us have the patience and stamina needed to discern honestly where we belong and what are we called to commit to in life.

Esperando en Paciencia

Si bien tenemos en el Evangelio una imagen del Espíritu de Dios apareciendo como una paloma en el bautismo de Jesús, no la tenemos como la única imagen.

En realidad, muchas de las veces se siente y se experimenta la presencia del Espíritu Santo que con nuestros ojos. Cuando tenemos una idea o inspiración, la atribuimos al Espíritu. Cuando las cosas dispares se unen sin esfuerzo, podemos reconocerlo, el Espíritu lo completó. San Pablo nos dice que el Espíritu se experimenta como amor, gozo, paz, paciencia, bondad, fidelidad, gentileza, tolerancia, modestia, castidad, y autocontrol.

Tomemos solo una de esas experiencias para nuestros propósitos de discernimiento: paciencia. Necesitamos la ayuda del Espíritu para ser pacientes porque el discernimiento requiere energía y consume nuestra atención en algunas etapas. Incluso podría causarnos incomodidad y frustración. La paciencia con el tiempo que lleva descubrir y reclamar nuestros deseos para nuestras vidas y el deseo del Espíritu por nosotras es un don del Espíritu.

Que cada una de nosotras tenga la paciencia y la resistencia necesaria para discernir honestamente a dónde pertenecemos y a qué estamos llamadas a comprometernos en la vida.

I don’t know anyone else who had such a dramatic experience and revelation as Jesus did at his Baptism! We just heard the Gospel describe the event this past Sunday, so it might help to ponder further just what he may have experienced that we can take with us as we listen to our own desires and what God desires for us.

Jesus called our attention to this moment by first stepping forward and asking for this anointing as God’s Beloved. When we (or our parents and godparents) asked that we be baptized, we were invited more closely into following Jesus’ way of living. We may not have been aware, but as God’s beloved ourselves, we were chosen for something special in our lives, some mission that can only be fulfilled by us, no one else. 

As we discern just what that mission is for us, it is vital to pay attention to what our heart desires. What is it we long for? What matters to us? What do we really want to do in this world that has so many needs? Where do our gifts match needs of people around us? Or Earth’s needs? What is it we desire?

As with Jesus, we ask God for guidance in our discernment. Where and who can I serve best? 

Then, listen for God’s response to you, the beloved.

Llamada y Bendecida

iNo conozco a nadie más que haya tenido una experiencia y revelación tan dramática como lo tuvo Jesús en su bautismo! Acabamos de escuchar el Evangelio describir el evento el Domingo pasado, por lo que podría ser útil reflexionar más sobre lo que él pudo haber experimentado y que podamos llevar con nosotras mientras escuchamos nuestros propios deseos y lo que Dios desea para nosotras.

Jesús llamó nuestra atención a este momento dando un paso adelante y pidiendo esta unción como el Amado de Dios. Cuando nosotras (o nuestros padres y padrinos) pidieron que fueramos bautizadas, fuimos invitadas más de cerca a seguir la forma de vivir de Jesús. Puede que no nos hayamos dado cuenta, pero como amadas de Dios nosotras mismas, fuimos elegidas para algo especial en nuestras vidas, una misión que solo nosotras podemos cumplir, nadie más.

A medida que discernimos cuál es esa misión para nosotras, es vital prestar atención a lo que nuestro corazón desea. ¿Qué es lo que anhelamos? ¿Qué nos importa a nosotras? ¿Qué es lo que realmente queremos hacer en este mundo que tiene tantas necesidades? ¿Dónde coinciden nuestros dones con las necesidades de las personas que nos rodean? ¿O las necesidades de la Tierra? ¿Qué es lo que deseamos?

Al igual que con Jesús, le pedimos a Dios que nos guíe en nuestro discernimiento. ¿Dónde y a quién puedo servir mejor?

Luego, escucha la respuesta de Dios para ti, la amada.

John the Baptist had quite a following of disciples who listened to him preach, watched him baptizing, and noticed the distinctive way he lived. Early in John’s Gospel, Jesus showed up, giving the Baptist a chance to do what was his calling, point the way to Jesus. The story goes on that two of John’s disciples heard him refer to Jesus as “Lamb of God” and out of curiosity they went over to meet Jesus. The Gospel then says, “…Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, ‘What are you looking for?’” (John 1:35-39) 

When we’re discerning God’s call in our lives – maybe for our lives – we also are being asked the same question, “What are you looking for?” A solid, predictable career? Loads of income? Good health? A marriage partner? A meaningful life of service? A way to live your God-given gifts to the fullest? A life of adventure and making a difference in peoples’ lives? A way to give back to God all the love God has poured out in your life? A path to holiness? “Yes” you say.

Consider, then, a life that will be full of meaning and service, one that will develop the gifts you have been given and a community of women who will challenge and support your growth as a person, including a deepening spirituality and relationship with the same Jesus who asks the question posed above. If you are looking for a relationship with Jesus and wonder if it’s with the Dominican Sisters, you may want to do what the two disciples did, that is, “Come and See” where he is staying. April 17-19, 2020, we will be hosting a weekend of discernment here in Adrian where you will meet others searching for their responses to “What are you looking for?”

¿Cómo Responderá?

Juán el Bautista tenía muchos seguidores que lo escucharon predicar, lo vieron bautizar, y notaron la forma distintiva en que vivía. Al principio del Evangelio de Juán, Jesús apareció, dándole al Bautista la oportunidad de hacer lo que fué su llamado, señalar el camino a Jesús. La historia continúa que dos de los discípulos de Juán lo escucharon referirse a Jesús como "Cordero de Dios" y, por curiosidad, fueron a encontrarse con Jesús. El Evangelio luego dice: "... Jesús se volvió y vió los que le seguían, y les dijo: "¿Qué estás buscando? " (Juán 1:35-39) 

Cuando estamos discerniendo el llamado de Dios en nuestras vidas – tal vez por nuestras vidas – también nos hacen la misma pregunta: "¿Qué está buscando?" ¿Una carrera sólida y predecible? ¿Muchos ingresos? ¿Buena salúd? ¿Un compañero de matrimonio? ¿Una vida de servicio significativa? ¿Una forma de vivir al máximo sus dones dados por Dios? ¿Una vida de aventura y marcando la diferencia en la vida de las personas? ¿Una forma de devolverle a Dios todo el amor que Dios ha derramado en su vida? ¿Un camino a la santidad? y usted responde, "Sí".

Considere, pues, una vida que estará llena de sentido y servicio, una que desarrollará los dones que ha recibido y una comunidad de mujeres que desafiarán y apoyarán su crecimiento como persona, incluyendo una espiritualidad y una relación más profunda con el mismo Jesús que le hace la pregunta planteada anteriormente. Si está buscando una relación con Jesús y se pregunta si es con las Hermanas Domínicas, es posible que desee hacer lo que hicieron los dos discípulos, eso es, "Venga y Vea" dónde él se hospeda. In the liturgical season of Advent, we begin a time of waiting for the coming again of Jesus into moments of our daily lives. Advent is like flower bulbs. These oddly-shaped forms are planted in the autumn here in the northern hemisphere, come up as tiny seedlings each spring and gradually blossom. Waiting throughout the long winter buried in darkness under the soil, they make themselves ready to blossom. Both darkness and waiting are essential to the fulfillment of their purpose. 

As we discern what God’s call is for our lives we do lots of waiting, praying, and listening without knowing just what the answer may be or when it will come to us. When we imagine these bulbs with personalities, we wonder what they are feeling as they wait. Like them we wait without knowing, sometimes feeling impatient, until the time is right. We’re not in control, just as the conditions needed for bulbs to grow are not controlled by the bulbs.

During Advent we’re invited to enter into the mystery, the darkness, and the waiting for the right time to receive the guidance we need.

Misterios en la Oscuridad

En la temporada litúrgica de Adviento, comenzamos un tiempo de espera de la venida de Jesús a momentos en nuestras vidas cotidianas. Adviento es como bulbos de flores. Estos bulbos de formas extrañas se plantan en otoño aquí en el hemisferio norte, surgen como pequeñas plántulas cada primavera y florecen gradualmente. Esperando durante todo el largo invierno enterrados en la oscuridad bajo la tierra, se preparan para florecer. Tanto la oscuridad como la espera son esenciales para el cumplimiento de su propósito.

A medida que discernimos cuál es el llamado de Dios para nuestras vidas, esperamos, oramos, y escuchamos mucho sin saber cuál puede ser la respuesta o cuándo nos llegará. Cuando imaginamos estos bulbos con personalidades, nos preguntamos, ¿Qué sienten mientras esperan? Al igual que ellos, esperamos sin saberlo, a veces sintiéndonos impacientes, hasta que sea el momento adecuado. No tenemos el control, al igual que las condiciones necesarias para que los bulbos crezcan no están controladas por los bulbos.

With the celebration of Thanksgiving here in the U.S. we seem to be surrounded by messages of thanks and various ways to thank each other. While most messages I’ve seen or heard are aimed at families, friends, and neighbors, it wouldn’t hurt to widen our lenses to see everyone as deserving of our thanks.

Especially at this time of year I want us to be aware of the Giver of all gifts. We receive so many gifts every day that it’s not humanly possible to notice all of them, no matter how hard we try. 

In the process of discernment, the generous gifts of God accompany us. A gift arrives when we need to see clearly, to listen well, to read just the right bit of wisdom, or to meet up by chance with people who know us well – and who ask us just the right questions at the right time. These are all gifts from our Loving God, gifts that are more than we asked for and more than we can ever pay attention to. This is why the annual celebration of this particular holiday is so important.

So, let’s thank God for the plentiful gifts we’re showered with – especially, those who are discerning today God’s call for their lives. May each of us trust these important gifts that just show up! We remember Isaiah’s message from God: “...because you are precious in my sight...and because I love you...” (Isaiah 43:4)

Agradecer al Dador de Regalos

Con la celebración del Día de Acción de Gracias aquí en los Estados Unidos, parece que estamos rodeadas de mensajes de agradecimiento y varias formas de agradecernos mutuamente. Mientras la mayoría de los mensajes que he visto o escuchado están dirigidos a familias, amigas y vecinas, no estaría de más ampliar nuestros lentes para ver que todos merecen nuestro agradecimiento.

Especialmente en esta época del año, quiero que seamos conscientes del Dador de todos los regalos. Recibimos tantos regalos todos los días que no es humanamente posible notarlos todos, no importanta que tanto lo intentemos.

En el proceso de discernimiento, los generosos dones de Dios nos acompañan. Un regalo llega cuando necesitamos ver con claridad, o escuchar bien, o leer la sabiduría adecuada, o reunirnos por casualidad con personas que nos conocen bien – y que nos hacen las preguntas correctas en el momento adecuado. Todos estos son regalos de nuestro Dios amoroso, regalos que son más de lo que habíamos pedido y más de lo que podemos prestar atención. Es por eso que la celebración anual de esta fiesta en particular es tan importante.

Así que, demos gracias a Dios por los abundantes dones con los que nos hemos duchado – especialmente aquellas que están discerniendo hoy el llamado de Dios para sus vidas. ¡Que cada una de nosotras confiemos en estos importantes regalos que aparecen repentinamente! Recordemos el mensaje de Isaías departe de Dios: "...porque eres preciosa a mi vista... y porque te amo…”(Isaías 43:4)
