A Sister Reflects - Reflexión de una Hermana

Spiritual writers encourage a life organized around being discerning. In other words, pondering next steps in life no matter how small or large our choices seem to be. They advise us to review our day in the evening before sleep and to hold our day in prayer the next morning, asking the Holy Spirit for guidance and wisdom in our choices.

All well and good! However, in our busy day-to-day living we must live awake in order to live discerningly. Taking time for quiet centering during each day helps us be awake to possibilities and awake to what the Spirit is doing in our lives that day. A good practice in the evening is to recall when we were awake to the Spirit’s movement in the day. What did we notice? When did we sense a little nudge in one direction or another?

The Spirit is present with us, working imaginatively and persistently. Like branches are to a tree the Spirit is connecting us with life that gives meaning and nourishment to what we’re doing. As we gain proficiency in noticing how the Spirit is with us at all times, we grow more awake and more discerning about where the Spirit is leading. This discerning ability influences our choices.

I cannot recommend strongly enough that a spiritual director can be invaluable for anyone wishing to be more awake to where the Spirit may be calling.

May we all be blessed and awake,
Sister Tarianne

Hermana Tarianne

We humans are funny creatures. We like our messages, especially those that come from the Holy Spirit, to be clear, directive, and loud enough so they won’t be mistaken for something else! That way we can be sure we’re following our life’s purpose.

I believe this is an issue of trust in our discernment, once we’ve opened our hearts to the workings of the Spirit and are considering how best to follow the path in our everyday lives. The desire for God can be experienced in prayer certainly, but also in the people who are really close to us. Those friends, family and colleagues who have spent time with us and who know us well can often see in us what we don’t notice – or haven’t named – in ourselves.

The whispers and nudges within can lead us closer to what God is calling us to do with our lives. Assuming we are open to look further, a spiritual director can help immensely because they are trained in the art of listening deeply to how the Spirit is communicating with us. She or he may suggest ways we also can listen more deeply and discern until we have clarity for our next step.

May your eyes be opened as were the two disciples who met Jesus on the road to Emmaus. At one point those two people realized their “hearts were burning” (with joy and realization) within them.

May you experience such joy as you discern and discover,

Descubrimiento

Hermana Tarianne

How we spend our time can reveal what’s really important, not what we say is important. I’m referring to discretionary time, not time that’s committed to a job or studies. When we have “free” time, how do we spend it?

Smartphones can give a weekly report on how much time someone spends on which apps. Amazing! It used to be if we wanted to find out how much time was being spent on which priorities, we would set up a time sheet and record our activities every half hour of the workday. Now it’s all electronically recorded!

When discerning a call from God about what to do with our lives, this kind of electronic report might come in handy! We’d be able to see for ourselves how much time, especially quality time, we’re spending listening to God or listening to those important others in our lives who convey God’s message for our lives. Tuning in requires that we make time available to give our full our attention to what’s important. A good question to ask ourselves periodically is, “How am I spending my time, my life energy?”

May each of us have the grace to tune in to what’s really important,

Many times questions show up when we’re trying to hear where God is calling us. I invite you to take a look at the questions below and see if they give you an insight or two.

Is your weekly ministry more life-giving and energizing than your regular job at work? Do you try to keep vocation literature you’ve been reading tucked away so no one can see it? Is there a sense in which you feel called to give more or be more and you’re trying to discover what the “more” means? Has the idea of becoming a sister come up for you repeatedly?

A relationship with God is powerful. Is your relationship with God such that you want to share the Good News with others? Does your heart long for “MORE”? Do you have a sneaking suspicion that you are on the brink of a major life decision? Are you afraid to tell friends and family that you are thinking about becoming a sister? Is there a frequent tug in your heart to serve others more?

Why not take some quiet time with these questions and see what you can discover,
Sister Tarianne

Hermana Tarianne

Our attention is bombarded from many sides: ads, podcasts, school courses, business priorities and deadlines, live streaming, texting, music, searching the internet, and listening to reminders pinging on our phones; and that’s just in our immediate surroundings. Often there are more things vying for our attention! As a result we may have gotten into the habit of reacting to the latest attention-grabber, instead of making free or conscious choices of how to spend our energy and where to invest our attention.

Paying attention can be a spiritual practice. It’s a better habit to cultivate in life. When I use the phrase “paying attention” I mean making choices about what to pay attention to and when.

This spiritual practice becomes especially vital when we’re trying to understand what God is calling us to do with our lives. Discerning this choice needs our commitment to paying attention. Decisions that support us in paying attention include setting aside time for quiet and deep listening, even, at times, to go away for a few days of retreat so we can be less interrupted in our listening to ourselves and to God.

The heart is a metaphor for this deep listening. In quiet times, especially extended times of quiet, we can pay attention to what matters to our hearts. This is where we meet God, who leads us to choices where we can best use our unique gifts.

May you not delay in making the time you need for this kind of listening, remembering that God is present in your heart’s desire.

Sister Tarianne

The other day I began wondering where we get our creative ideas. I realized they come from everywhere when we’re open to noticing them. They come disguised in an off-hand comment, a favorite song, failed attempts at things that are important to us and from feeling unsatisfied or restless in our desire for more in life.

Because these creative nudges arrive in varied and unpredictable ways, it’s vital to stay alert for their presence. Nudges show up in our dreams and rambling thoughts. They can be sparked during an argument with friends or parents. Nudges provide precious insights and can launch valuable searching times in our lives.

Nudges can become as familiar as friends, because ultimately they can put us in touch with our best selves and persist as we deepen our relationship with ourselves, and with God. Just as God can communicate with us through questions, God also offers nudges that get our attention and urge us to think about our lives. When we’re noticing, we don’t miss the chance to listen for what God has in mind for us!

Blessings,
Sister Tarianne

Bendiciones,
Hermana Tarianne

Fundamentos de Discernimiento: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnqSPiJCmEE&list=PLuoxvsAgi-bznZeOL9hakRZtSKwz1Gg_i&index=1

One of the keys to support ourselves during times of discernment is through prayer. That ability to be silent before God as a listener is as vital as picturing ourselves in the presence of a wise person. Ask a simple question at the start of prayer, “Loving One, what do you want me to do with my life?” Then, wait in silence to hear the response.

Asking a question similar to this one probably won’t be a one-time experience of asking and then hearing the response, because this (and others like it) is a profound question! It may take many times for us to hear, really tune in to how the response comes. In prayer and quiet time, we are preparing to receive something precious from the One who loves us.

Receptivity and openness, not attachment to a specific outcome, allows us to hear well. We may be surprised by how our response comes. It could be through an insight received during prayer, a seemingly accidental conversation with another person, going for a walk, fixing a meal, doing dishes, or taking a shower. The response may just show up and our heart will know “this is it.” If we don’t know the full answer to our question, we will know the next step to take.

Discerning is a journey, a pilgrimage, during which we discover clues along the paths we walk. We can feel joy and be assured that all the paths lead to the same end, connection with our God.

May you have patience and persistence walking this path,
Sister Tarianne

Hermana Tarianne

Over a lifetime we cross many thresholds or entryways into something new. It may be a new home or job, a new phase of life, or a new challenge to our health and well-being. At each of these thresholds there are supporters who help us across.

Who are the supporters that are ready to assist you in crossing to a new moment in your life? Do you expect them to step forward spontaneously or might they be waiting for you to ask them? Are they good listeners who help you discern the rightness of this threshold? Are they organizers or teachers who can help you think through the necessary steps or point out other information that will help your discerning at the thresholds?

Are they people who help you see the long view of life so you can understand how this immediate threshold will make a way forward to the thresholds to come? Are they the wise and holy ones who are so grounded in their relationship with God that when you hear them speak, you can trust it is God’s message for you?

Whoever our supporters are and however they come to assist us, we all need them to help us cross the thresholds of our lives, those God-callings that help us respond to our life’s purpose.

So, look around and notice the ones who will support you in your next steps,

Hermana Tarianne

Reading the stories in the New Testament about what happened to individual people when they met Jesus, we glimpse the powerful impact of those encounters.

From the lowly shepherds and wise magi visiting Jesus at his birth to his meeting with Mary Magdalene in the garden after his resurrection, we realize each person was deeply affected by being in his presence. Scripture recounts the many times Jesus healed people physically. He also raised sons, daughters, and friends back to life. As we slow down and think more deeply, we conclude not only their lives were transformed but the lives of those around them were most likely totally changed as a result of encountering Jesus.

Vocations, or calls from God to respond to our life’s purpose, are grounded in encounters with Jesus. These encounters include those we meet with great awareness and encounters with him we only later discover were hidden in the shadow of a deeper conversation we had with a friend, a parent, a co-worker, our boss, or a spiritual director. We can experience the encounter as an ordinary happening or something that profoundly touched our hearts when we read it in an online blog or saw the powerful witness of someone giving her or his life for others.

The Spirit of Jesus can work anywhere, anytime, and through anyone or any circumstance in our lives. As those who were lame, blind, or in need of instruction clamored to be in the presence of Jesus once they heard about what he did, we also have opportunities of encounter. May we ready our hearts to pay attention to them. They may look differently than they did in Jesus’ time, but the encounters with him are no less real.

As the Psalmist said, “If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts,”

Hermana Tarianne

It’s not hard for me to imagine the scene when the Gospel on the Feast of the Annunciation is read on March 25th. Out of the several exchanges the young Mary has with the visiting angel Gabriel, it ends with Mary saying, “Yes, I see it all now: I'm ... ready to serve. Let it be with me just as you say.” Or today we might translate it, “Yes, ok. I’ll do it.”

And with her “yes” Mary of Nazareth’s life was forever changed. From that time forward she dependably repeated her “yes” to other more ordinary events happened in her life.

In each of our lives, we are only asked for the next “yes.” To a variety of experiences and opportunities in our lives we agree to enter into them – or not. The choice is ours.

In discerning God’s call for our lives, as with Mary’s invitation to be the mother of Jesus, we only need to attend to our response for the “yes” in the moment. All the future “yes-es” we’ll be asked to give will come one at a time. Each time we may be asked to give a little more and stretch a little farther in our life journey. But also when we are asked anew, we have more information about our choices, more insight and, hopefully, more willingness to say ”Yes.”

Stay calm. Stay centered. As Jesus recommends, “remain” in his love. When asked, there’s no need to jump too far into the future and fuel our anxiety. Focus on the choice before you. Will you say “yes” this time?

May our God of abundance be with you,
Sister Tarianne

Hermana Tarianne
