This coming Sunday, we celebrate Pentecost, when we remember how the coming of the Holy Spirit. Over the years, I have heard many different ways for describing the Spirit, including Advocate, Comforter, Healer, Intercessor and Revealer, to name only a few, yet, despite the acknowledgement of how important the Spirit’s role in our life is, I rarely hear about the Holy Spirit in homilies. In my own experience, I have come to understand the Spirit mostly through the working of the Spirit in my life. 

Discernment brings us into attunement with the Holy Spirit as we listen to how God is speaking to us. When we pray, we do so in unity with the Spirit, asking God to guide us. When we are overwhelmed in making a decision, the Spirit brings a sense of calm and the reminder that we are not alone. The Spirit leads us to clarity in the thicket of choices that often lay ahead of us, drawing us closer into the mystery of God. Discernment has helped me to know God, because practicing discernment has helped me know the Spirit. In the end, the title I most often apply to the Spirit in my own life is “Friend.” 

On this Pentecost, my prayer is that you will know and experience the gifts of the Spirit in your own life.

¡Oh Ven, Espíritu Santo!

Este próximo Domingo, celebramos Pentecostés, cuando recordamos la venida del Espíritu Santo. A lo largo de los años, he escuchado muchas maneras diferentes de describir al Espíritu, incluyendo Abogado, Consolador, Sanador, Intercesor y Revelador.  Sin embargo, a pesar de reconocer cuán importante es el trabajo del Espíritu en nuestra vida, es rara la vez que escucho acerca del Espíritu Santo en las homilías. En mi propia experiencia, he llegado a comprender el Espíritu principalmente a través de la obra del Espíritu en mi vida.

El discernimiento nos pone en sintonía con el Espíritu Santo mientras escuchamos cómo Dios nos habla. Cuando oramos, lo hacemos en unidad con el Espíritu, pidiéndole a Dios que nos guíe. Cuando nos sentimos abrumadas al tener que tomar una decisión, el Espíritu nos trae una sensación de calma y nos recuerda que no estamos solas. El Espíritu nos lleva a la claridad en medio de tantas opciones que muchas veces nos esperan, acercándonos al misterio de Dios. El discernimiento me ha ayudado a conocer a Dios, porque practicar el discernimiento me ha ayudado a conocer el Espíritu. Al final, el título que aplico con más frecuencia al Espíritu en mi propia vida es “Amigo”.

En este Pentecostés, mi oración es que conozca y experimente los dones del Espíritu en su propia vida.

For Jarelyn, timing was important in her discernment process. First the questions started rising in her and she tried finding the answers within herself. At some point the answers stopped coming as easily and then they stopped coming at all. She felt stuck.

She tried talking with friends and one of her co-workers that she was close to, but they only helped a little. The wisest friend mentioned to her that she was meeting every month with a spiritual director at her church and how much it was helping her focus and be at peace. Her friend suggested she contact this person to see if she could help her move forward in her search.

What Jarelyn discovered was that the spiritual director was trained to listen deeply to people on a spiritual search, to ask perceptive questions and to offer suggested practices that could help Jarelyn with the life decisions that lay before her at this moment. 

As disciples of Jesus on a journey together we are in a common search for what God is calling us toward in order to become who we were created to become. The good news is that the Spirit accompanies us in this journey and leads us toward companions who give us just the help we need at the time. Blessed be the grace of the Holy Spirit!

Cómo Pueden Ayudar Las Directoras Espirituales

Para Jarelyn, el momento oportuno era importante en su proceso de discernimiento. Al principio las preguntas comenzaron a surgir en ella e intentó encontrar las respuestas dentro de sí misma.Después de un tiempo, las respuestas dejaron de llegar tan fácilmente y luego dejaron de llegar.Ella se sintió estancada.

Intentó hablar con sus amigas y una de sus compañeras del trabajo con la que estaba cerca, pero solo ayudaron un poco.La amiga más sabia le mencionó que se reunía todos los meses con una directora espiritual en su iglesia y cuánto le ayudaba a concentrarse y estar en paz.Su amiga le sugirió que se comunicara con esta persona para ver si podía ayudarla a avanzar en su búsqueda.

Lo que descubrió Jarelyn fué que la directora espiritual estaba entrenado para escuchar profundamente a las personas en una búsqueda espiritual, para hacer preguntas perceptivas y para ofrecer prácticas que le podrían ayudar a Jarelyn con las decisiones de la vida que le enfrentaban en este momento.

Como discípulos de Jesús juntas en una jornada, estamos en una búsqueda común hacia a lo que Dios nos está llamando para convertirnos en lo que fuimos creadas a ser.La buena noticia es que el Espíritu nos acompaña en esta jornada y nos guía hacia compañeras que nos brindan la ayuda que necesitamos en ese momento. ¡Bendita sea la gracia del Espíritu Santo!

A wise teacher once told me that life is full of detours, but not to worry about taking them. Detours can teach us something while we’re on them that we can bring back as learnings to help guide us on our life’s path.

This also happens on our discernment journey as well because our first choice of a path may not be the one to which we are really called. You probably have heard many stories from others who chose what they thought was their calling only to discover later – sometimes years later – that this really was not their heart’s calling. The same is true for shorter detours that delay a commitment for life.

We don’t travel detours uselessly. Where the Holy Spirit is involved – everywhere and at all times – there are learnings embedded in every experience. Although Jesus probably wasn’t thinking of detours when he told the disciples, “The Advocate (the Spirit) will teach you everything and bring to mind all I have taught you,” we can be sure the Spirit is in our detours and will bring us back the wiser when we return to focus our calling.

Please feel encouraged to be compassionate with yourself, keep listening and learning as you journey on your way.

Desvio Adelante

Un maestro sabio me dijo una vez que la vida está llena de desvíos, pero que no me preocupara por tomarlos. Los desvíos pueden enseñarnos algo mientras estamos en ellos que podemos traer como aprendizajes para ayudarnos a guiarnos en el camino de nuestra vida.

Esto también sucede en nuestro viaje de discernimiento porque nuestra primera elección de un camino puede no ser aquel al que realmente somos llamadas. Probablemente haya escuchado muchas historias de otras que eligieron lo que pensaban que era su vocación solo para descubrir más tarde – a veces años después – que realmente no era la vocación de sus corazones.  Lo mismo es cierto para desvíos más cortos que retrasan un compromiso de por vida.

No viajamos desvíos inútilmente. Donde está involucrado el Espíritu Santo – en todas partes y en todo momento – hay enseñanzas integradas en cada experiencia. Aunque Jesús probablemente no estaba pensando en desvíos cuando les dijo a los discípulos: "El Consolador (el Espíritu) les enseñará todo y les recordará todo lo que les he enseñado," podemos estar confiadas de que el Espíritu está en nuestros desvíos y nos regresará más sabias cuando volvamos a enfocar nuestra vocación.

Por favor, siéntase libre a ser compasiva con usted misma, siga escuchando y aprendiendo mientras viaja en su camino.

We humans are funny creatures. We like our messages, especially those that come from the Holy Spirit, to be clear, directive, and loud enough so they won’t be mistaken for something else! That way we can be sure we’re following our life’s purpose.

I believe this is an issue of trust in our discernment, once we’ve opened our hearts to the workings of the Spirit and are considering how best to follow the path in our everyday lives. The desire for God can be experienced in prayer certainly, but also in the people who are really close to us. Those friends, family and colleagues who have spent time with us and who know us well can often see in us what we don’t notice – or haven’t named – in ourselves.

The whispers and nudges within can lead us closer to what God is calling us to do with our lives. Assuming we are open to look further, a spiritual director can help immensely because they are trained in the art of listening deeply to how the Spirit is communicating with us. She or he may suggest ways we also can listen more deeply and discern until we have clarity for our next step.

May your eyes be opened as were the two disciples who met Jesus on the road to Emmaus. At one point those two people realized their “hearts were burning” (with joy and realization) within them.

Descubrimiento

Nosotros los humanos somos criaturas curiosas. Nos gusta que nuestros mensajes, especialmente aquellos que provienen del Espíritu Santo, sean claros, directas, y lo suficientemente ruidosos para que no se confundan con otra cosa! De esa manera podemos estar seguros de que estamos siguiendo el propósito de nuestra vida.

Creo que este es un tema de confianza en nuestro discernimiento, una vez que hemos abierto nuestros corazones al funcionamiento del Espíritu y estamos considerando la mejor manera de seguir el camino en nuestra vida cotidiana. El deseo de Dios ciertamente puede ser experimentado en la oración, pero también en las personas que están realmente cerca de nosotros. Esos amigos, familiares y colegas que han pasado tiempo con nosotros y que nos conocen bien muchas veces pueden ver en nosotros lo que no notamos - o no hemos nombrado - en nosotros mismos.

Los susurros y estimulaciones internos nos pueden acercar más a lo que Dios nos está pidiendo que hagamos con nuestras vidas. Asumiendo que estamos abiertos a seguir mirando, un director espiritual puede ayudar enormemente porque están entrenados en el arte de escuchar profundamente cómo el Espíritu se comunica con nosotros. Ella o él puede sugerir maneras en que también podemos escuchar y discernir más profundamente hasta que tengamos claridad para nuestro próximo paso.

Que tus ojos sean abiertos como lo fueron los dos discípulos que encontraron a Jesús en el camino a Emaús. En un momento esas dos personas se dieron cuenta de que sus "corazones se estaban quemando" (con alegría y realización) dentro de ellos.

Pentecost is a Jewish feast that comes 50 days after the celebration of Passover, the holiday season in which Jesus was crucified. On the feast of Pentecost, the disciples of Jesus were gathered together in a room sometimes known as the “upper room.”

Doors were locked for fear of the Jews, and hearts were locked in grief.

“There are some griefs so loud 
They could bring down the sky 
And there are griefs so still 
None knows how deep they lie...” - May Sarton

What are the emotions filling this room?

• Fear is named (Jesus was crucified, what will happen to us?)
• Bewilderment (What is this resurrection all about?)
• Confusion (What kind of group is this – what did I get myself into?)
• Amazement and excitement (What lies ahead?)

In the midst of this Jesus appears and says, “Peace be with you.”

What is this upper room? Your upper room?

• Is it that uncertain feeling of having no idea what God is asking of you? 
• Is it bewilderment of what is truth in a given situation?
• Is it disappointment in yourself?
• Is it coping with broken and hurt relationships among family and friends and not understanding how this happened?

Is our upper room being in solidarity with people who lost everything through fire, hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, who say, “This is all we have known our whole life. What do we do now?” Or sitting quietly in front of the TV, watching the slow death of our Earth as climate change stills the heartbeat of Mother Earth’s life?

Think about your upper room, whatever is going on … it impacts me … because we are community … we are together in that locked room. 

And it’s in that locked room that Jesus appears and says, “Peace,” breathes on us, and says, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”

The Holy Spirit comes to us in a small flame. Whatever gift we receive is what we need to take with us as we leave our upper room. What gift of the Spirit, what Pentecost Fire, did you pray for?
