A Sister Reflects - Reflexión de una Hermana

One of the ways to help in discernment is to be specific about the choices that are yours by using your imagination. This means literally to picture yourself in the role for which you may be discerning. This is especially helpful once you’ve done research on possible religious communities to which you feel called.

It’s simple: picture yourself living that life, living daily in community with others in a house or convent, working alongside them in a certain ministry, imagining yourself in a group praying with community members at Mass or during morning and evening prayer or picturing yourself taking classes or doing the required study for a class in your field.

As you see yourself in those situations, pay attention to how you feel doing the activities in which that particular community engages. If you experience a sense of inner peacefulness and calm or even excitement, that’s information you can use in the discernment process as one indicator that this may be your call from God.

It’s a way the Spirit uses our imaginations and invites us closer. As you discern, you remain in our prayer.

Blessings,
Sister Tarianne

Bendiciones,
Hermana Tarianne

“If today you hear God’s voice, harden not your hearts.” Psalm 95:8

When we’re trying to hear God’s call for what we are to do with our lives, we invest not just our ears, but our whole selves. We can look for clues from our body, our emotions, our mind, and our spirit. Each of them communicate bits of information as we search.

When praying or sitting quietly, we pay attention to places in our body that cause discomfort or pain indicating this isn’t “it”. Likewise we feel a relaxation of tense muscles or sense the butterflies of excitement when we have landed on what may be the call.

Over time we begin noticing a pattern of feelings that stay with us, feelings of joy, peace, or a sense of rightness about choices we’re considering. Likewise, we may feel a sense of unease, fear, resistance, even frustration and impatience in the struggle to have an answer.

When we have done our research on possibilities and thought about what we’ve learned from wise mentors, our spirit lets us know when to be at peace and likewise lets us know that something is not yet right about where we’ve arrived.

Maybe one of these recorded conversations will assist with your pondering.

Blessings as you continue on God’s way,
Sister Tarianne

Discerniendo Con Todo Tu Ser

Hermana Tarianne

I’m not sure why I find this image so delightful, but I do. It’s a photo from the shelf above my 6 year old niece’s bed. She adores Minions. And she thinks of the other ‘stuffie’ as “Baby Jesus when he grew up.”

I love that she put Jesus and the Minion (Kevin, for those in the know) together. It reminds me of how Jesus can speak to any situation, even an animated or pretend one. Jesus meets us where we are – whether we are a Minion-loving six-year-old, a twenty-something struggling to find our life path, a fifty-something grieving the loss of a relationship, or an eighty-something coming to peace with aging.

Let Jesus speak to you just as you are this day.

Blessings,

Sister Lorraine
