A Sister Reflects - Reflexión de una Hermana

Snowy landscapeWith the holidays mostly behind us, family gatherings thin out for now. I’d like to suggest we pay attention to God’s clue in nature at this darker time of year. We can all benefit from slowing down a bit. We may sense a call from inside ourselves for rest and taking time from the busy-ness just past.

Prayer may appeal more at this time of year in the northern hemisphere. The darkness brings with it invitations to spend longer times pondering God’s calls, whether we are thinking about our life commitment or simply the next call in our lives.

How do you sense God’s call in your life? Where is God leading you? These questions are good to reflect on until you’re clear enough to make a decision.

Listen well as did Samuel after he realized (with Eli’s help) that it was God who was calling him. In discernment we count on help from friends, family, and our community of faith to support our search for where God is leading us. Our part is to listen. This is why the dark time of year can be the best time for the quiet needed for this kind of listening.

In this beginning of the New Year, may you learn from nature’s gift of darkness,

Sister Tarianne

Hermana Tarianne

Once in a while when I go for a walk, I pick up a pinecone that’s dropped off a nearby evergreen tree. Once as I inspected the cone more closely, I discovered what squirrels have known for a long time: the cones hold hidden seeds. Each seed is full of promise for future life, no matter how large or small the cones are.

The same also is true for each of us. Our lives hold seeds full of promise. These precious seeds can be hidden so deeply within us that we can’t see or recognize them at first. But they are there within us!

Even as we continue days in the long darkness of our northern winter, I’d like to invite you to move toward the light by planning to attend our April 17-19, 2020, weekend of discernment here in Adrian. Please consider giving yourself this sacred time apart to reflect on those hidden desires of your heart.

These desires are the ones planted by the Spirit and just waiting for a time of silence so you can ponder them. This weekend gathering will provide such a time for you to listen – to yourself and others, for praying and examining those seeds of God’s calling that want to grow in you. What a lovely gift to offer yourself time to really pay attention. Click here for a detailed description and to register.

May we each celebrate the gift of Jesus’ birth and the new seeds life provides,

Sister Tarianne

Atraida Por La Luz Por Delante

Network of circlesLooking back on our lives we notice a series of seemingly disparate events have begun to form patterns. These patterns include our routine practices, habits, mistakes, relationships, or dreams – no matter what the separate events are – they reveal that we were on a path all along.

Being aware is one way the Spirit works in guiding us. Because we’re fully engaged in our busy daily lives, it’s hard to notice this or that event as part of a pattern. We’re too close to see.

To see the emerging patterns, we need to take time for a retreat, a space and time to slow down, spending time in quiet to pray a bit and listen more. In that sacred space we begin noticing how God has been at work in us. Amidst the hustle and bustle of Christmas preparations, the season of Advent gives each of us a good reason to step back and take those moments of quiet, allowing us to really see, appreciate and give thanks for the unique work of God in our lives.

Continued blessings for seeing and hearing,
Sister Tarianne

Hermana Tarianne

bench overlooking a marshMary’s “yes” to the angel when told she was favored and chosen to bear the Son of God inspires us by its simple consent and its leap of faith into an uncertain future. We realize she couldn’t fully know or understand all the other things that would come her way because of her “yes.” Mary trusted God.

None of us when discerning our future path knows for certain that our decision is the right choice for us because there is no way to know the unknown. It is all about our willingness to trust God, who loves us. When we have done our best to listen to what the Holy Spirit has in mind for our lives, we step onto the path, continuing to trust in God’s love as we move forward.

In these days of Advent waiting we can allow ourselves extra time to welcome silence into our lives. Silence is God’s best way to communicate. Our listening and really hearing is best done in silence too.

May you be still enough to hear the still, small whispers of God, who loves you,

flower bulbs in a basketIn the liturgical season of Advent, we begin a time of waiting for the coming again of Jesus into moments of our daily lives. Advent is like flower bulbs. These oddly-shaped forms are planted in the autumn here in the northern hemisphere, come up as tiny seedlings each spring and gradually blossom. Waiting throughout the long winter buried in darkness under the soil, they make themselves ready to blossom. Both darkness and waiting are essential to the fulfillment of their purpose.

As we discern what God’s call is for our lives we do lots of waiting, praying, and listening without knowing just what the answer may be or when it will come to us. When we imagine these bulbs with personalities, we wonder what they are feeling as they wait. Like them we wait without knowing, sometimes feeling impatient, until the time is right. We’re not in control, just as the conditions needed for bulbs to grow are not controlled by the bulbs.

During Advent we’re invited to enter into the mystery, the darkness, and the waiting for the right time to receive the guidance we need.

Blessings on your Advent waiting,
Sister Tarianne

Hermana Tarianne

Thanksgiving wishes on chalkboard with white pumpkinWith the celebration of Thanksgiving here in the U.S. we seem to be surrounded by messages of thanks and various ways to thank each other. While most messages I’ve seen or heard are aimed at families, friends, and neighbors, it wouldn’t hurt to widen our lenses to see everyone as deserving of our thanks.

Especially at this time of year I want us to be aware of the Giver of all gifts. We receive so many gifts every day that it’s not humanly possible to notice all of them, no matter how hard we try.

In the process of discernment, the generous gifts of God accompany us. A gift arrives when we need to see clearly, to listen well, to read just the right bit of wisdom, or to meet up by chance with people who know us well – and who ask us just the right questions at the right time. These are all gifts from our Loving God, gifts that are more than we asked for and more than we can ever pay attention to. This is why the annual celebration of this particular holiday is so important.

So, let’s thank God for the plentiful gifts we’re showered with – especially, those who are discerning today God’s call for their lives. May each of us trust these important gifts that just show up! We remember Isaiah’s message from God: “...because you are precious in my sight...and because I love you...” (Isaiah 43:4)

Blessings of thanksgiving,
Sister Tarianne

Hermana Tarianne

Tree with red applesOne of my favorite passages in Scripture is in St. John’s Gospel, the 15th chapter: “You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.”

Observing any kind of fruit tree: berry or apple, for instance, through the seasons, we notice that berries don’t suddenly appear in the spring or summer. They become fruit after the winter thaw, the spring rains, the increasing amount of daily sunshine and loads of leaves that nourish both the tree and the blossoms that precede the budding fruit. In other words, the fruit comes as a result of a process of growth. It is the way we also come to the fruit of knowledge for our lives.

One of the fruits of discernment is clarity that propels us forward with more confidence in our choices. None of the time we invest is wasted when we’re discerning what God may be calling us to do in life. It all bears fruit that will affect our perspective, our choices and the experience we have with God the rest of our lives. Why not spend some time this week thinking about – or noticing – fruit? Whether you see fruit growing or see the fruits of growth, give thanks to God who nourishes us with life all the time in so many ways!

Blessings on your noticing,
Sister Tarianne

Dando Fruto Que Permanece

Hermana Tarianne

Unless a person is going to run scattershot toward just any choice for her life, there is no substitute for taking the time needed to discern. You may note the repetition of my encouraging patience with the discernment process. It takes the time it takes, unless, as mentioned above, someone is willing to just choose for the sake of choosing and results don’t matter.

Discernment requires time for quiet reflection and prayer because we are weighing a balance among our personal gifts with the needs of the world that we see. Really, our whole lives are a call to develop and use the gifts we received when we came into being. The question we explore is how to best put them into service? Where am I needed? And am I called to do this as a single person working with others, as a member of a religious community, or with a marriage partner and a family?

Once again, I encourage you to take time, perhaps a regular reflection time at home or at a retreat weekend. Take the time to pray, asking God to show you your call that will allow a fulfilling life. Take the time to meet with a spiritual director or mentor to talk over what you are hearing in your quiet time. A person skilled in this field can help you connect the dots of what you may be discovering and keep you from turning in circles and not move forward.

May God’s plentiful grace draw you toward the future God has in mind for you.

Blessings,
Sister Tarianne

No Hay Sustituto

¿Dónde me necesitan?

Bendiciones,
Hermana Tarianne

When we’re discerning a call from God for our lives, we may think it’s all up to us to figure it out. But that’s not the case. The first step is God’s! God calls each person to a life that will develop and fulfill the gifts given to her or him. Just think about this for a moment.

When we’re born, we come with gifts. We are a gift. Our whole lives are meant to exercise the gifts we came with, sharing them with everyone we meet and with everyone to whom we are sent. So, we can relax. God knows we have gifts to share.

In discerning the best way we can share them, we take the time for silent listening to God, for prayer, maybe for journaling. We may at times meet with a mentor or spiritual companion who can help us hear even more keenly what God is asking of us. Our gifts were given for good and for the community.

May we listen well with openness and trust in the Holy Spirit who guides each of us. Count on our prayers of support too.

Blessings,
Sister Tarianne

Bendiciones,
Hermana Tarianne

With the passing of Halloween I think of all the fun we had as children dressing up as our favorite monster, animal, movie star, or saint. We worked for hours and asked our mothers for help making this dress-up the most believable it could be. There was always excitement in the house at this time of year.

Discernment can be a little like this too. When there’s no more thinking or praying that can help. We just need to try it on and see how our choice feels.

There’s an initial period in of religious life where a woman lives the daily life of a Sister, entering into the daily rhythms of prayer, community life around meals, study or relaxation, and chances to serve in a volunteer capacity. There are also times to reflect with a formation director how living this way fits the person’s own sense of self-expression and use of the gifts God gave her.

While putting on a costume at Halloween lets the child pretend she or he is that person for a brief time, actually stepping into religious life really allows someone to sense whether this is God’s call or not.

The weekend of November 8-10 will offer an opportunity to step a little closer into this way of Dominican life as we host a “Come and See Discernment Weekend” here in Adrian at Weber Center. If this sounds like an experience you would like to try on, please be in touch.

Sister Tarianne

¡No Es Una Fantasía!
