A Sister Reflects - Reflexión de una Hermana

Rack of clothingThere’s definitely a reason why department stores and small clothing shops have fitting rooms. Yes, of course they want you to buy their merchandise, but they also want to save everyone time and money returning items that don’t fit. They want customers to see if the clothing fits. Is it the right color, the right size? In addition to price, these are important factors.

The same is true when discerning whether a call to a religious life in a particular congregation is right for the person discerning. The question, “Does it fit?” is a vital one. Not only is a discerning young woman asking if religious life fits her sense of herself and what she wants to do with her life, but she also is asking does this congregation fit for her? Does their manner of living, their kinds of ministry, their prayer styles and values they bring to the Church and society (their charism) fit for her? Important questions such as these are practical parts of the discernment process. Sometimes the only way to tell is to try it on.

Such a try-it-on experience is available for you the weekend of October 23-24 when we host a virtual Come and See Discernment Retreat. This opportunity is for you to see whether the Adrian Dominican Congregation fits with how you feel called to commit your life. The information and registration form can be found here.

Let me know if I can answer any questions,
Sister Tarianne

A CHANCE TO PRAY WITH OTHERS: We gather online for prayer and reflection the first Wednesday of each month to listen to God’s Word.

Hermana Tarianne

One of my favorite things to do on a beautiful day is to take a long hike. Before I set off, I pack my backpack with everything that I will need for the next couple of hours. I make sure I have a hat and sunscreen, a good water bottle, some basic medical supplies, a camera and a good snack. Since discernment is also a journey, we also need to pack our “backpack” so our journey goes smoothly.

The first thing I put into in my discernment backpack is the calendar where I keep all my appointments. Since prayer is a priority for me, I need to make sure that I am taking time to pray within my busy schedule. Next, I pack my cell phone and list of contacts so I have someone with whom to talk about my discernment process, whether with a spiritual director, a friend, or family member. I also want to slip in some books of good spiritual reading. Sometimes I like a biography of a saint, other times it might be reading Scripture, and sometimes I really need poetry or a book about a social justice issue. All of these genres show me how others have approached their relationship to the divine and invite me into deeper relationship. I then double check to make sure that I put in my journal. Journaling reminds me to stop, look around and pay attention, and, reading over what I have written in the past, I can discover patterns and remember that I have already overcome challenges. Finally, I make sure to put into my backpack a good snack. Discernment takes a lot of energy, and it’s important to take care of the needs of our body and mind. Now that my backpack is full, I’m ready to go on this journey!

I’m always amazed when I go for my daily walk how flowers, grass, and weeds can grow up through cement and asphalt! I think about their strength and their persistence in finding a way through the seeming hardness of cement, the permeability of asphalt. I admire their commitment and determination for life and viability!

God’s purpose for our own lives is just as determined, just as tireless and persistent. God finds a way to our hearts, even when they might be hardened and resistant to a call. It might come while watching a TV show or even a commercial. It could come during Mass, through songs sung, or the homily preached. It can come through the comments of family members, friends, or teachers. It can come loudly and insistently, and it can come quietly like a whisper or intuition.

Like cement and asphalt God’s love for us will find a way through. May we listen with our ears and our hearts and follow! These short videos show God’s tireless call: Sister Marilín Listens and Sister Lorraine Ponders Her Call.

If you have a feeling you might be called to religious life, consider participating in our "Zoom and See" October 23 and 24, 2020 discernment weekend with other discerners to explore the call.

We keep you in our daily prayer,
Sister Tarianne

We host an online prayer and reflection group the first Wednesday of each month to listen to God’s Word. The next one is October 7th starting 7:15 p.m. If you would like to be with others for support and to share on Scripture passages in a reflective process, please send me an email: tdeyonker@adriandominicans.org.

Hermana Tarianne

bowl of flax seedThere are people, avid gardeners, who pluck seeds from each summer’s dead flowers to get a head start on next season’s planting. There also are professional seed-savers who save diverse seeds in protected storage areas where they will remain safe should our biodiversity dwindle more than it has already.

I like these seed-savers’ hope in the future, their belief in life’s potential. Having a ready supply of seeds to begin a new season of growth seems to me very responsible living.

This brings me to those special seeds of insight and awareness that we have collected as we live each day. Some people collect these “seeds” by writing them in a journal. Others speak with trusted friends about them. Still others have artistic skills and so they compose songs or poetry, paintings, or sculptures that embody precious seeds of knowing what they value in life. When we know what is important to us, we can more easily align our values with what God is calling us to do with our lives. May you treasure all the seeds you save!

Attend our "Zoom and See" October 23 and 24, 2020, weekend with other discerners to explore the seeds of God’s call.

Semillas De Vida Con Potencial

woman walking aloneChristine was a very busy young woman. Not only did she feel lucky to have a full-time job, but due to her mother’s recent surgery she was helping to take care of three younger siblings. While they weren’t infants, they still needed supervision and, of course, dinner each evening. Christine didn’t mind helping out, but when she could make some quiet time for herself, she did. Her mother would recover from the surgery and life would go back to normal. She began wondering about her own future. What would she do with her life?

In those times of silence Christine thought and sometimes prayed to God for some direction for her life. She really liked her job, but couldn’t see herself doing that kind of work the rest of her life. She liked overseeing her younger siblings, but didn’t see herself having children of her own someday.

In was during the quiet times of her day – early morning before work and in the evening after the younger ones were asleep – that Christine allowed herself to think deeply about what she was called to do with her life. She wondered what God had in mind. Frustratingly, God didn’t speak aloud in words, but sometimes she just had a feeling about what was hers to do in her life.

Are you making time for silence in your life? Do you use it for thinking and praying? Silence is key for hearing your heart’s call. These short videos may help… Sister Antonette Discerns and Sister Judith and Ministry.

Encontrando El Silencio

Bendiciones,

diving board and poolCourage is considered one of the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit and is celebrated in movies, books, and art, while we are told that showing fear makes us weak. However, some people remind us that fear can play an important role. A good example of this point of view comes from Gavin de Becker, author of The Gift of Fear, who reminds us that fear can alert us when we ourselves, or those we love, are in danger. I know from my own experience that fear can cause me to act in a more considerate and loving manner, by reminding me to drive more slowly through construction zones and to wear a mask in public during this pandemic.

In every decision, we have to determine whether there are good reasons to be afraid and whether those reasons outweigh the good. Fear can prevent us from doing something dangerous or cause us to change how we do an activity, but sometimes we do an activity because the benefit outweighs the risk.

When I was little, I was afraid of the deep end of the pool. While I stayed at the shallow end, I felt in control because I could put my feet on the pool floor, but there was nothing but my own strength and the water to support me when I went into the deep end. But, I needed to have the courage to dive in if I wanted to go up to the next level in my swimming class. While there were good reasons to be afraid, I had swim instructors and lifeguards in case there was an emergency. Both fear and courage are part of making decisions, by helping us to balance both risk and the freedom God promises us.

Hermana Katherine Frazier, OP

In Jesus’ parable of the Sower and the Seed, the sower scatters seeds on different types of ground. (Mark 4:3-8) What struck me is the receptivity of the “good soil”. Gardeners everywhere could describe what makes soil “good”. This one aspect of the soil – its receptivity – confirmed the soil knew what to do to nurture the seed into full life. In the discernment process we assume we’re the “good” soil, the receptive soil. But what makes us receptive?

One important ingredient is spiritual companionship. There are people who are experienced in spiritual companionship or direction and have skills in deep listening, in noticing how the Spirit may be guiding someone and in asking insightful questions. Each of us has our blind spots, those rocks and thorns that block our seeing and hearing the voice of the Spirit. A spiritual director or companion can assist us in clearing those blocks out of our spiritual pathway.

If you are discerning your purpose in life, whether a call to religious life and ministry or another choice, a spiritual director can help you nurture the receptivity of your heart, your good soil. Your heart receives the Spirit’s message. You can check with a local retreat center or someone at your local parish for names of spiritual directors. Seeing this video may help too: How We Know We are Growing Spiritually

May you find a spiritual companion who asks questions that help,

Tierra Receptiva

“God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work.” (2 Corinthians 9:8)

While the discernment process can pass through confusing phases and pose unexpected dilemmas, it’s important to trust, as St. Paul’s letter to the Corinthians states, “God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance.” You will have what you need, when you need it.

The blessing or grace may not come when you want it, but when you need it. Because you can be at odds with God’s timing, it’s vital to stay centered in your heart and attuned to how the Spirit is moving you. Answers to your question about where to commit your life probably won’t be as concrete as “Here, give yourself here.” Ask God for the courage and insight to know “here, is the next step.” Then, take that step. In experiencing the next step you will gain insights into the rightness of that step so you can then take the next one.

The whole path is not be laid out before you, but the next step will be revealed as you pay attention. A spiritual companion on this journey can help. Video resource: Pay Attention to Feelings

green fern leaf unfoldingI received this one-word-bit of advice from a friend who recognized I was being impatient and frustrated as I rushed to get to answers I wanted. Craving answers is not uncommon. We love certainty, especially when it comes to making choices for our lives. And, why not? These are important choices. However, this is not how God works in us. If you’re willing to try a different approach, one that involves waiting and noticing, read further.

Take yourself on a walk in nature where you can stop and notice a plant or leaf or small tree in development. Allow yourself to observe all you can about the leaf or bud and notice just where it is in its unfolding. Then walk the same path the next day or in a few days, stop and visit the same leaf or plant and notice how it has changed.

It’s taken hours and days for that change to happen. This is how growth and development happen in nature – slowly, growth barely perceptible, with lots of time just waiting. It can be easier to learn this from a leaf, plant or tree because it’s outside of us. Yet, we are a part of nature and we also have to wait for growth or development to take place within us. This includes the information we want about our life choices. Just as with other living beings, our waiting is rewarded by our Creator and, in the right time, we are graced with the insights we’re seeking.

¡Espere!

woman reading by a windowIf the Gospel parable about a tiny mustard seed is any clue to us as we discern, then we can expect indicators to our life’s call in the small hints around us. Most of us will never have experiences like St. Paul did of being knocked off a horse and hearing a voice call him to account and conversion. But all of us have small clues in our everyday lives that let us know what God draws us toward.

Noticing those inklings within us is part of discernment. With more experience of paying attention to the signs, we get more proficient at it. We are so loved by God that we are never left on our own when it comes to discernment. God is continually drawing us closer. Learning how to minimize distractions, we can see and hear those tiny hints that appear throughout our days.

May you have the grace to see and hear those them in your everyday life. These videos may assist you as you move forward: Using Your Imagination in Discernment and Noticing Your Feelings as You Discern.
