Next weekend, the Class of 2021 will graduate from the high school where I minister. I am so grateful to have watched this class over the past three years as they have matured and become the women they are today. After graduation, they will disperse across the country to different colleges and universities, building on the knowledge they gained in high school to study new subjects. While many will return for the alumnae events, they will also build new networks of belonging. Graduation is a reminder that transitions are an important part of life, and one that comes with both loss and excitement.

These times of transition are a time when discernment can be useful, so that we can take advantage of all the potential opportunities that open up as our life changes. Whenever we find ourselves at a time of transition, whether expected or not, we can ask ourselves:

• What opportunities before me at this time will help me to grow as a person?

• What opportunities before me at this time excite me?

• Is there something from the part of life I am moving away from that I want to keep (i.e. friendships, work ethic, a faith practice, etc.)?

• Where is God for me at this time?

I hope that these questions will prove helpful for you through all the transitions you encounter in life, and help you to recognize how God is active during these times in our lives.

Transiciones

El próximo fin de semana, los estudiantes del año 2021 se graduarán de la escuela secundaria donde ministro. Estoy muy agradecida de haber visto este grupo estudiantil durante los últimos tres años madurar y llegar a ser las mujeres que son hoy. Después de graduarse, se dispersarán por todo el país a diferentes colegios y universidades, aprovechando el conocimiento que adquirieron en la escuela secundaria para estudiar nuevas materias. Mientras muchas regresarán para los eventos de exalumnas, también construirán nuevas redes de pertenencia. La graduación es un recordatorio de que las transiciones son una parte importante de la vida y que viene acompañada de pérdida y emoción.

Estos tiempos de transición son un momento en el que el discernimiento puede ser útil, para que podamos aprovechar todas las oportunidades que se abren a medida que nuestra vida cambia. Siempre que nos encontremos en un momento de transición, sea esperado o no, podemos preguntarnos:

• ¿Qué oportunidades ante mí en este momento me ayudarán a crecer como persona?

• ¿Qué oportunidades ante mí en este momento me emocionan?

• ¿Hay algo de la parte de la vida de la que me estoy alejando y que quiero mantener (es decir, amistades, ética de trabajo, una práctica de fe, etc.)?

• ¿Dónde está Dios para mí en este momento?

Espero que estas preguntas le resulten útiles a través de todas las transiciones que encuentre en la vida y que le ayuden a reconocer cómo Dios está activo durante estos momentos de nuestras vidas.

We are approaching the Feast of Pentecost when the first disciples of Jesus were empowered and emboldened by the Spirit’s presence and action. The Holy Spirit is always present and active in the world and in each of our lives. Noticing how the Holy Spirit is working in our lives enriches the process of our discernment.

The Spirit acts within us, giving us ears to listen, patience to wait for insights that urge our following. The Spirit often acts through others in our lives and through our life circumstances. In those quiet moments we take each day, whether for prayer, meditation, walking in nature or sitting quietly, the Spirit offers nudges in the form of ideas and suggestions that help us imagine things that may never have occurred to us before that moment.

People who are around us every day also are the source of a word, an idea, a need, a vision for how we might respond to the Holy Spirit’s call to us to use our gifts for others. As we attune the “ears of our heart” to the Spirit’s promptings we can experience more confidence, more boldness in our own actions. The Spirit’s work becomes visible among us. We may not see tongues of fire like the early disciples did, but we may see loving and effective action that results in healing and transformation for this hurting world of ours!

May you quiet yourself to notice where the Holy Spirit is working in you.

Un Espíritu Activo

Nos acercamos a la Fiesta de Pentecostés cuando los primeros discípulos de Jesús fueron fortalecidos y empoderados por la presencia y la acción del Espíritu. El Espíritu Santo está siempre presente y activo en el mundo y en cada una de nuestras vidas. Darnos cuenta de cómo el Espíritu Santo obra en nuestras vidas enriquece el proceso de nuestro discernimiento.

El Espíritu actúa dentro de nosotras, dándonos oídos para escuchar, paciencia para esperar las percepciones que instan nuestro seguimiento. Muchas veces el Espíritu actúa a través de otras en nuestras vidas y a través de nuestras circunstancias de la vida. En esos momentos tranquilos que tomamos cada día, ya sea para orar, meditar, caminar en la naturaleza o sentarse en silencio, el Espíritu ofrece empujones en forma de ideas y sugerencias que nos ayudan a imaginar cosas que quizás nunca se nos hayan ocurrido antes de ese momento.

Las personas que nos rodean todos los días también son la fuente de una palabra, una idea, una necesidad, una visión de cómo podríamos responder al llamado del Espíritu Santo para que usemos nuestros dones para las demás. A medida que sintonizemos los "oídos de nuestro corazón" con las impresiones del Espíritu, podemos experimentar más confianza y más empoderamiento en nuestras propias acciones. La obra del Espíritu se hace visible entre nosotras. Puede que no veamos lenguas de fuego como los primeros discípulos, ¡pero podremos ver acciones amorosas y efectivas que resultan en sanidad y transformación para este mundo nuestro que sufre!

As the early morning sun cast deep shadows on everything it touched, I watched a rabbit hopping across the front yard. It stopped every seven or eight hops to look around before proceeding. While I’m not sure what it was assessing when it stopped, the thought occurred to me that this is something akin to our process when we are in discernment. 

We move through our days busy about many things. Even in these times of pandemic slowdown we keep ourselves busy. When we are discerning important choices for our future, it is vital to stop periodically and just notice. What we’re looking for is what will enhance life, what is for our good, what resonates with me and how I best can use the gifts God has given me for the common good of all.

Because the Holy Spirit is always at work in our lives, there will always be something to notice. Paying attention is the action to take during discernment. Checking in with ourselves, jotting what we notice in our journal and sharing with a trusted spiritual companion will make the process worthwhile and lead to fruitful choices for our lives.

May you perk up the ears of your heart to the presence of the Holy Spirit as you go forward this week,

Como Orejas de Conejo

Mientras el sol de la mañana proyectaba sombras profundas sobre todo lo que tocaba, vi a un conejo saltando por el jardín. Se detuvo cada siete u ocho saltos para mirar alrededor antes de continuar. No estoy segura de qué estaba pensando cuando se detuvo, pero se me ocurrió que esto es algo similar a nuestro proceso cuando estamos en discernimiento.

Pasamos por nuestros días ocupadas en muchas cosas. Aún en estos tiempos de desaceleración pandémica nos mantenemos ocupadas. Cuando estamos discerniendo decisiones importantes para nuestro futuro, es vital detenernos de vez en cuando simplemente para darnos cuenta. Lo que estamos buscando es lo que mejorará la vida, lo que es para nuestro bien, lo que resuena en mí y cómo puedo usar mejor los dones que Dios me ha dado para el bien común de todas.

Debido a que el Espíritu Santo siempre está obrando en nuestras vidas, siempre habrá algo que notar. Prestar atención es la acción que se debe realizar durante el discernimiento. Analizarnos a nosotras mismas, apuntar lo que notamos en nuestro diario y compartir con una compañera espiritual de confianza hará que el proceso valga la pena y nos lleve a decisiones fructíferas para nuestras vidas.

Remember the episode in the Gospel when Thomas said he wouldn’t believe unless he could see for himself and touch the wounds of Jesus? Sometimes we can be like he was and demand a sign from God that we are called to use our gifts in service to God’s people. 

But look. There are signs all around us if we know how to see them: the joy I experience in helping others; my ability to get so engrossed in study or prayer that I lose track of time and am surprised when I look up and see I’m late for my next commitment; the satisfaction I receive in responding to the needs of friends and family or the contentment I experience in sharing with others in a community setting.

These may be the signs that your joy is in serving the needs of those who are hurting and doing so with others who share that same commitment. Las Señales a Nuestro Alrededor

¿Recuerda el episodio del Evangelio cuando Tomás dijo que no creería a menos que pudiera ver por sí mismo y tocar las heridas de Jesús? A veces podemos ser como él y exigirle a Dios una señal de que somos llamadas a usar nuestros dones al servicio del pueblo de Dios.

Pero, mire. Hay señales a nuestro alrededor si sabemos como verlas: la alegría que siento al ayudar a los demás; mi capacidad para concentrarme tanto en el estudio o la oración que pierdo la noción del tiempo y me sorprende cuando miro hacia arriba y veo que llego tarde a mi próximo compromiso; la satisfacción que recibo al responder a las necesidades de amigas y la familia o la satisfacción que siento al compartir con otras en un entorno comunitario.

Estas pueden ser las señales de que su gozo es atender las necesidades de aquellas que están sufriendo y hacerlo con otras que comparten el mismo compromiso. Sí, hay señales a nuestro alrededor si tan solo podemos notarlas. Quizás estos videos puedan ayudar: Cómo notar los sentimientos en el discernimiento y ¿Tiene Dios un plan para nosotras?

A couple of weeks ago, I had a conversation with a student who was struggling to decide which college she would attend in the fall. She was looking at two colleges, and both had both drawbacks and points in their favor. I suggested to her that she make a list of pros and cons for each option and to pray with that list. I once used this method when I was discerning whether or not to buy a car. What I learned through this experience is that what matters isn’t the number of items in one particular column, but how much weight we put on the items in a column. Although there were few items I had listed under the pros of not owning a car, I realized that was the column where I had listed the items that were most aligned with my values and future goals.

For those of us who process information visually, having everything laid out this way can be helpful. I have also known people who need to talk through a situation in order to come to a decision and others who like to do a physical activity, for example running, in order to think through a decision. Most importantly, each of these methods lead us into prayer, where we listen to what God is calling us toward, and opening us to the goodness that God promises each of us.

Pros y Contras

Hace un par de semanas, tuve una conversación con una estudiante que estaba luchando en decidir a qué universidad asistiría en el otoño. Ella estaba considerando dos universidades, y ambas tenían inconvenientes y puntos a su favor. Le sugerí que hiciera una lista de pros y contras para cada opción y que orara con esa lista. Una vez utilicé este método cuando estaba discerniendo si comprar o no un automóvil. Lo que aprendí a través de esta experiencia es que lo que importa no es la cantidad de elementos en una columna en particular, sino cuánto peso le damos a los elementos en una columna. Aunque había pocos elementos que había enumerado bajo las ventajas de no tener un automóvil, me di cuenta de que esa era la columna donde había enumerado los elementos que estaban más alineados con mis valores y metas futuras.

Para aquellas de nosotras que procesamos la información visualmente, tener todo puesto de esta manera puede ser útil. También he conocido personas que necesitan hablar sobre una situación para tomar una decisión y otras a las que les gusta hacer una actividad física, por ejemplo, correr, para pensar sobre una decisión. Lo más importante es que cada uno de estos métodos nos lleva a la oración, donde escuchamos a lo que Dios nos está llamando y nos abre a la bondad que Dios nos promete a cada una de nosotras.

You’ve likely heard the phrase, “No good deed goes unpunished.” This kind of truth is also suitable for the discernment process. While it is desirable to give serious prayer, time, and thoughtful consideration to what God may be calling us to do with our lives, it is not without its challenges. Once on a path of discernment all manner of distractions, temptations, and doubts can be met on the path as well.

It’s one thing to be forewarned about these encounters and quite another to recognize them when they show up while we’re discerning. If you are a person who journals, writing down the doubts and temptations that allure us to other choices can be a helpful way to recognize the challenges when they arrive. They will arrive! Naming them takes back their power to influence us.

A large part of discerning a vocation from God is this sorting process, the elimination of some choices and the recognition of positive and attractive qualities as we narrow our options. You may find these links helpful:

Distracciones Que Impiden

Probablemente haya escuchado la frase: "Ninguna buena obra queda sin castigo". Este tipo de verdad también es adecuado para el proceso del discernimiento. Mientras es deseable dedicar tiempo, oración, y consideración seria a lo que Dios puede estar llamándonos a hacer con nuestras vidas, no está libre de desafíos. Una vez en el camino del discernimiento, todo tipo de distracciones, tentaciones, y dudas también se pueden encontrar en el camino.

Una cosa es ser advertida sobre estos encuentros y otra muy distinta reconocerlos cuando aparecen mientras estamos discerniendo. Si usted es una persona que lleva un diario, escribir las dudas y tentaciones que nos atraen hacia otras opciones puede ser una forma útil de reconocer los desafíos cuando llegan. ¡Llegarán! Nombrarlos les quita el poder de influir en nosotras.

Recent windy days here in Michigan had me thinking about the Scripture, “The wind blows where it wills, and you can hear the sound it makes, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes…” (John 3:8) The reference in John’s gospel is to the Holy Spirit who is active. We may never know how the Spirit is leading or where the Spirit may appear to be working in our lives. Like the wind, the movements of the Spirit are mystery.

This work of the Holy Spirit is hopeful when we are discerning what to do with our lives, whether we are called here or there, with these folks or those, in this part of the world or that. The Holy Spirit is active whether, like the winds, we know where they come from or whether we don’t. 

As Jesus promised, after his resurrection and ascension to his Father, he sent his Spirit as an advocate, an amazing source of support and One who is on our side. I encourage you to ask the Spirit for guidance as you journey. Ask for signs that you are following a path that will lead you where you need to be, taking next steps in faith and trusting that the Spirit always “has our backs”, so to speak.

Obra del Espíritu

Los recientes días vientosos aquí en Michigan me hicieron pensar en la Escritura, "El viento sopla donde quiere, y puedes escuchar el sonido que hace, pero no sabes de dónde viene ni a dónde va ..." (Juan 3:8). La referencia en el evangelio de Juan es al Espíritu Santo que está activo. Es posible que nunca sepamos cómo nos guía el Espíritu o dónde puede estar obrando el Espíritu en nuestras vidas. Como el viento, los movimientos del Espíritu son un misterio.

Esta obra del Espíritu Santo nos da esperanza cuando estamos discerniendo qué hacer con nuestras vidas, ya sea que nos llame aquí o allá, con esta gente o con aquellas, en esta parte del mundo o en aquella. El Espíritu Santo está activo, aunque sepamos o no de dónde vienen.

Como Jesús prometió, después de su resurrección y ascensión a su Padre, envió a su Espíritu como un abogado, una fuente asombrosa de apoyo y Uno que está de nuestro lado. La animo a que le pida al Espíritu que la guíe durante su jornada. Pida señales de que está siguiendo un camino que la llevará a donde necesita estar, dando los próximos pasos con fe y confiando en que el Espíritu siempre “nos respalda”, por así decirlo.

In all the Gospels for this first week of the Easter season, we hear about various disciples as they see Jesus for the first time after he is risen. Somehow, he is different in how he looks to them, because we hear their hesitance in recognizing him alive and his reassurance to them that it is he.

It can be the same as we are discerning. We wonder whether the intuitions and feedback we are sensing is from God or from within ourselves. It is important to find out which it is, so we can trust what God is revealing to us in prayer, in our times of meditation, and in our conversations with others. Meeting with someone who is skilled in this kind of discernment, known as a spiritual director or spiritual companion, can support you as you listen deeply to what is revealed in you.

Because the Holy Spirit speaks in our hearts, we may be unfamiliar with listening this way. A spiritual director can help us hear. Like those disciples who saw Jesus after his resurrection, we sometimes cannot readily believe we are called by God for a specific purpose. We all need reassurance. It’s really all right. Why not look to the person(s) who can offer it in God’s name. I invite you to watch these videos: What is Spiritual Direction and What is Discernment?

¡Qué Revelador!

En todos los evangelios de esta primera semana de la temporada de Pascua, escuchamos acerca de varios discípulos cuando ven a Jesús por primera vez después de su resurrección. De alguna manera, ellos lo ven diferente, porque escuchamos la duda en reconocerlo vivo y la seguridad que él les da que es él.

Puede ser lo mismo mientras discernimos. Nos preguntamos si las intuiciones y las emociones que estamos sintiendo provienen de Dios o de nosotras mismas. Es importante averiguar cuál es, para que podamos confiar en lo que Dios nos está revelando en la oración, en nuestros momentos de meditación y en nuestras conversaciones con las demás. Tener una junta con alguien que tenga habilidades en este tipo de discernimiento, conocido como directora espiritual o compañera espiritual, puede ayudarle a escuchar profundamente lo que se revela en usted.

Debido a que el Espíritu Santo habla en nuestros corazones, es posible que no estemos acostumbradas con escuchar de esta manera. Una directora espiritual puede ayudarnos a escuchar. Realmente todo está bien. ¿Por qué no buscar a la (s) persona (s) que pueden ofrecerlo en el nombre de Dios? During these many months of pandemic closures and extra health precautions, we have not been able to regularly receive the Eucharist during Mass as we had been used to doing because we are viewing the celebrations on live stream. It may be true for many of you reading this reflection as well. 

This can be difficult when a person is in the midst of discerning an important step in life. Receiving the Eucharist offers support in our journey and we feel the loss. However, our liturgical leaders have been helping us in our St. Catherine Chapel here at the Motherhouse by reminding us that although we are not receiving Jesus in the Eucharist, we believe he is within us at all times. That is what he promised – “I will be with you always!” He accompanies us at every moment and in every circumstance in which we find ourselves. This also means we can count on the presence of Jesus as we are discerning.

It is a mystery and a blessing of our faith that, like Jesus, we are never alone in what we are living through. When we have fears, doubts or questions, we have the ability to go inside ourselves in prayer, asking for the inner peace and wisdom we need. As we celebrate these Holy Days of Triduum that are central to our faith in Jesus and the influence of his Resurrection, may we do as Jesus invited his disciples to do in the garden of Gethsemane: stay with him. Be confident he is with us too.

¡Vida Maravillosa Dentro de Nosotras!

Durante estos muchos meses de cierres por la pandemia y precauciones adicionales de salúd, no hemos podido recibir la Eucaristía durante la misa con regularidad como acostumbramos hacer porque estamos viendo las celebraciones en directo. Tal vez sea cierto para muchas de ustedes que lean esta reflección.

Esto puede ser difícil cuando una persona está en medio de discernir un paso importante en la vida. Recibir la Eucaristía ofrece apoyo en nuestro camino y sentimos la pérdida. Sin embargo, nuestras líderes litúrgicos nos han estado ayudando en nuestra Capilla de Santa Catalina aquí en la casa madre recordándonos que aunque no estamos recibiendo a Jesús en la Eucaristía, creemos que Él está dentro de nosotras en todo momento. Eso es lo que prometió: "¡Estaré contigo siempre!" Nos acompaña en cada momento y en cada circunstancia en la que nos encontramos. Esto también significa que podemos contar con la presencia de Jesús mientras discernimos.

Es un misterio y una bendición de nuestra fe que, como Jesús, nunca estamos solas en lo que estamos viviendo. Cuando tenemos temores, dudas o preguntas, tenemos la capacidad de ir dentro de nosotras mismas en oración, pidiendo la paz interior y la sabiduría que necesitamos. Al celebrar estos Días Santos del Triduo que son fundamentales para nuestra fe en Jesús y la influencia de su Resurrección, hagamos lo que Jesús invitó a sus discípulos a hacer en el huerto de Getsemaní: quédese con él. Confíe en que él también está con nosotras.

This weekend we celebrated the Spring Equinox, and, at the same time, I began to see signs of spring here in the Midwest. On my walks, I’m beginning to see the green shoots from the ground, and I can hear the birds singing in the morning. All of these signs of life have been reminding me that discernment relies on being attentive to signs of new life within us. Sometimes this new life appears as a deepening of the relationships we have with one another, while other times it might be that we are more creative and full of new ideas. This is therefore my prayer for all those who are praying to God for direction in your life, that this new season will bring you signs of new life and hope.

Signos de Vida Nueva

Este fin de semana celebramos el Equinoccio de Primavera y, al mismo tiempo, comencé a ver señales de primavera aquí en el Medio Oeste. Durante mis paseos, puedo ver los brotes verdes saliendo de la tierra y puedo escuchar el canto de los pájaros por la mañana. Todas estas señales de vida me han estado recordando que el discernimiento se basa en estar atentas a las señales de vida nueva dentro de nosotras. A veces esta nueva vida aparece como una profundización de las relaciones que tenemos entre nosotras, mientras que otras veces puede ser que seamos más creativas y llenas de nuevas ideas. Por lo tanto, esta es mi oración para todas aquellas que están orando a Dios por dirección en su vida, que esta nueva temporada les traiga señales de nueva vida y esperanza.
