A Sister Reflects - Reflexión de una Hermana

a woman wearing a striped shirt adding bird seed to a blue bird feeder

One of the things that I appreciate about my current community is that I live with avid bird watchers. I had no idea that such a variety of birds, from blue jays and robins to rose-breasted grosbeaks lived in my corner of southeastern Michigan. Watching the birds as they nest in the bushes and trees surrounding my home and gather at the bird feeder, has given me a different perspective on Matthew 6:26-27, when Jesus reminds his followers that, if God will care for the birds of the air, how much more does God care for us human beings!

This knowledge provides a firm foundation for our discernment. During the process of making a decision, so much can be up in the air, as we let go of preconceived notions about where we should be and what we should do to ask, where is God inviting us next? Knowing that God is caring for us throughout our discernment, in fact, that God cares for us at all times, allows us to let go of the anxieties that hold us back from making a decision.
In your own discernment, you might find it helpful to reflect on this passage from Matthew and pray with these questions:
1.     When has God provided for you today?
2.     What gifts has God given you today?
3.     How is God asking you to shift your perspective about what is important?

Blessings,
Sister Katherine

Bendiciones,

Hermana Katherine

The powerful Gospel of last Sunday’s feast of the Transfiguration speaks to those of us who are trying to figure out where God may be calling us. If you notice, Peter, James and John began to be afraid once the cloud descended over all of them. Before that they seemed more fascinated by Jesus’ change of appearance and the presence of Moses and Elijah. Once the cloud covered  them they could no longer see clearly. The people and the surroundings disappeared from sight. Clarity collapsed into confusion resulting in their fear!

When we’re in the middle of discerning what to do with our lives there may be many choices we could make. Our dilemma comes at the juncture of so many good choices, many of which may seem really attractive. It is there – as with the Gospel story of Jesus’ transfiguration – that the word “LISTEN!” makes the most sense! Listen to your heart. Listen to your life and the choices you’ve made. Listen to what you feel. Listen to the mentors who have advised you up until now. Listen to what you have heard when you’re praying. Listen!

If we can be of help as you sort through those options for your life, please contact us. Perhaps these short videos can help guide you too: What commitment is God calling you to make?, Feelings in Discernment and Does God have a plan for us?

Blessings be yours as you journey,
Sr. Tarianne

Hermana Tarianne

A fuzzy caterpillar crawling across a green leaf

When I was in discernment for religious life, I was struggling as I was facing challenges I didn’t know existed. So, I took a prayer day at a local nature preserve. I walked the path and found a lovely clearing and decided to lay down and look up at the beautiful sky. The clouds were puffy and white and the leaves were turning their Fall colors. As I closed my eyes listening to the sounds around me I felt and heard a scratching on my sleeve. I looked over and it was a caterpillar walking across my arm. I gently removed the caterpillar and placed it back in the grass and went back to my meditation. Once again I felt and heard the scratching – the caterpillar was once again trying to crawl up over me and once again I gently put it back in the grass from where it came. As I entered back into my quiet prayer, yep, once again the caterpillar made it all the way up my sleeve heading toward my chest. Then it dawned on me that the caterpillar was trying to get across to the other side of me. So this time, I gently put it on the other side of me and watched as the caterpillar continued its happy trek across the grass to the trees. I was struck by the perseverance of this little critter who was determined to get to where it needed to go. What a powerful lesson to me, if this caterpillar could face such a huge obstacle as a human body with determination to get up and over, trusting they would be successful no matter how many tries it took. By placing my trust in God, I could face any obstacle in my journey to answer the call to religious life. What is your caterpillar saying to you?

Bendiciones,
Hermana Mary Jones, OP

"As you go, make this proclamation: 'The Kingdom of heaven is at hand.' Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, drive out demons. Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.”
(Mt 10.7-8)

The words of Jesus quoted in Matthew’s Gospel, spoken long ago to his disciples as he sent them out to minister to the people they encountered, have meaning today too. As with the disciples, our commitment to persons in need is where we are sent. Jesus affirmed the disciples as going in his name to the people who needed what they would bring.

As Dominicans we respond together to needs as we perceive them in the “signs of the times”, another way of saying the needs of the people in society today. Among so many needs calling for attention and resolution, there are choices to make. We can meet some of the needs. Others can meet some of the needs. With honest dialogue and prayer among us, we respond to needs as it is possible to do. We are always conscious there is more to do and we trust that God continues to call other disciples to be part of the mission!

If you would like to know more about how we Dominicans respond to people in need, we invite you to consider joining us to “Learn, Pray, Share and Celebrate” from August 7-8, 2023 here in Adrian at our retreat center.  Click here for more information and to register. We promise shared meals so conversations can happen.

I hope you will join us,
Sr. Tarianne

Hermana Tarianne

Study is an important part of Dominican life and has been ever since the beginning when the early Dominicans realized that study was necessary in order to preach the Word of God effectively. Dominicans use study as a discernment tool as well, as we study current events so that we can hear where God is calling us to the needs of the world. Study is also an important part of our own discernment, whether we are first looking at a congregation, a new ministry, or making any other changes to our life. Study gives us the information we need in order to make an informed choice, and we can then take that information we have learned into discussion with God as our discernment deepens.
I invite you to consider these questions for your own discernment:

1.    What information do I need to make a particular decision?
2.    Where can I get the information that I need?
3.    Is there someone who can give me the information that I need, including informing me about information that I did not realize I needed?
4.    Once I have the information I need, what steps will I take so that I can bring the matter to prayer?

If you want to learn more about the importance of study for Dominicans, I encourage you to check out this video: Preach with Your Life: Study.

Bendiciones,

Shared blog from September 2021.

Lately, I have been reflecting about the saying, “Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good,” and how it relates to discernment. One of the stumbling blocks I, and many others, have run into in discernment is that we fall into the trap of believing that because we are not perfect, or our discernment is not perfect, that the process must therefore be broken. The trap is that we then become stuck in our discernment, unable to move forward. Only God is perfect, and, although God accompanies us throughout discernment, we ourselves are imperfect beings. How then can we move forward so that we can unstick ourselves? The answer is that we trust when something is good enough, not as a matter of settling for something lesser, but in seizing what is good in front of us. We put this principle into practice we eat a piece of cake that has fallen apart, because, even though the cake is no longer a perfect slice, the cake is still delicious and worth eating! By shifting our framework to doing enough, we no longer have to hold ourselves to standards that we could never meet, but instead begin to focus on how we are being as present as we can where we are.

If you want to relate to struggling with feelings of perfection, I encourage you to watch this video: DISCO: What If I Don't Feel Worthy of Religious Life?

Sister Katherine

Two yellow arrow road sides. Top sign saying this way, pointing to the right. Bottom sign saying that way, pointing to the left

One of the questions my formation director would ask me when I was a candidate was whether something was helping me or becoming a distraction. This can be a helpful question when discerning, especially when a clear goal is in mind. For example, as a candidate, my priority was figuring out if the congregation was a good fit for me and learning more about my community. At other times, my priority has been a particular ministry or taking time for my community life. Sometimes something can be a helpful in one context and a distraction in others. Catching up with a friend can be helpful in many ways, but doing so instead of attending a meeting would be a problem! Wherever my focus might be at a particular time and place this question can still help me to decide where I put my time and energy and where I need to step away.

This question also serves another function by helping me to remember where I need to focus. Like so many other people, I have to balance several different parts of my life, whether projects for my ministry, my community life, or keeping up with friends and family members. When I find myself with a lot of obligations in my ministry, I might need to remind myself to pay attention to my community life or to catch up with a friend.

Distractions will always be a part of life, but there is also so much that brings us closer to God. May asking yourself which one is which, may your own relationship with God grow deeper.

Blessings,
Sister Katherine

Bendiciones,
Hermana Katherine

a women playing tennis

Today we reflect on a past post from Sister Mary.

When I was a little kid, I wanted to play tennis, but I struggled with my serve. My dad told me the importance of practicing. He suggested starting small, first with the toss, then footwork, then a week or two later, the strike, and finally the follow-through. Focusing on each small part allowed me to improve the small skills which brought together the overall skill. After lots of practice, my serve and overall play improved immensely. By high school I was a ranked player in my state.

The same strategy can help with developing the skills of discernment. Getting comfortable with the little things helps lead to the larger and longer practice. When I practiced my toss, it wasn’t just on the court, I carried a tennis ball around and would practice my toss anywhere. Listening for God’s voice takes practice, and there are a few skills that need developing. Becoming comfortable with quiet is important, but it takes practice. Just like practicing my toss everywhere and anywhere, try practicing comfort in the quiet in different times and places in your life. In the car, on a walk, or sitting in the sun one can develop the skill, the gift of becoming comfortable in the quiet. To take on discernment as a deliberate practice, practice entering into conversation with God about the little things in your life, before the big things.

Practice learning to listen – not just for God, but really listening to others. God may not speak to you like he speaks to others. Don't expect to be able to hear immediately if you've never listened before, it takes practice, and the practice is worth it.

The ball is in your court.

Sister Mary

A dove descending from the sky

This coming Sunday, we celebrate Pentecost, when we remember how the coming of the Holy Spirit. Over the years, I have heard many different ways for describing the Spirit, including Advocate, Comforter, Healer, Intercessor and Revealer, to name only a few, yet, despite the acknowledgement of how important the Spirit’s role in our life is, I rarely hear about the Holy Spirit in homilies. In my own experience, I have come to understand the Spirit mostly through the working of the Spirit in my life.

Discernment brings us into attunement with the Holy Spirit as we listen to how God is speaking to us. When we pray, we do so in unity with the Spirit, asking God to guide us. When we are overwhelmed in making a decision, the Spirit brings a sense of calm and the reminder that we are not alone. The Spirit leads us to clarity in the thicket of choices that often lay ahead of us, drawing us closer into the mystery of God. Discernment has helped me to know God, because practicing discernment has helped me know the Spirit. In the end, the title I most often apply to the Spirit in my own life is “Friend.”

On this Pentecost, my prayer is that you will know and experience the gifts of the Spirit in your own life.

Blessings,
Sister Katherine

Bendiciones,
Hermana Katherine

a basket of apples and pears

Today we reflect on a past post from Sister Tarianne.

Like shopping for groceries or harvesting the fruits of our gardens, an important feature in discerning is gathering information. So, if you have your symbolic “basket” ready to collect what you’ll need, let me mention a few items you may want to think about as you discern.

Your “basket” may be a journal where you think through your responses to these questions about skills needed in Religious Life: Can you live with ambiguity in your life, the Church, religious life? Are you flexible? Are you tolerant of other opinions besides your own? Do you have a high need for security? Can you raise questions that challenge the status quo? When you work with people is it with a spirit of generosity and cooperation with others? Do you live out of a spirit of hope? What evidence do you see that you can live a celibate life?

Other collections may include exploring the websites of congregations of women religious to learn about what they do and how they live out their charism. You might mention to your close friends that you’re thinking about this life choice and see whether they think the choice matches what they know about you and your gifts. You can talk with teachers or mentors about this life choice and listen to their feedback. What feedback do you want from them?

You’ll notice the basket is not full. Stay curious until you have enough information. Then it will be time to weigh the information in light of your desire and God’s desire for you. Are you called to “Preach with Your Life”?

May you have the grace of curiosity while you search,
Sister Tarianne

Hermana Tarianne
