A Sister Reflects - Reflexión de una Hermana

Driving from Michigan to central Ohio this week I passed acres of farmland. What I noticed were the colors of the fields: deep golden fields of wheat ready for harvest, brilliant green fields of corn and fields of rich black soil awaiting seeds to be sown in them. Each was stunningly attractive.

These sparked my thought about discernment. What makes it so tough at times is the richness of choices we have. At the end of the discernment process we know when we decide to follow one way of life we will have to let go of the others! Don’t we tend to want it all?

A wise presenter once commented that everyone is called – starting at birth to the single life. As we grow in wisdom, age, and grace, God calls some to stay in the single life or return to it after following a call to married life. Others in the Catholic tradition are called to religious life as a sister, brother, or priest.

Like the colorful fields of farmland, each life, each call from God, is rich and rewarding for us and vibrant in allowing us to make a difference as we walk our life with God.

I invite you to see how Dominicans live out their call (click here).

Blessings as you appreciate the richness of God’s call,
Sister Tarianne

Ricas Opciones

Hermana Tarianne

“If today you hear God’s voice, harden not your hearts.” Psalm 95:8

When we’re trying to hear God’s call for what we are to do with our lives, we invest not just our ears, but our whole selves. We can look for clues from our body, our emotions, our mind, and our spirit. Each of them communicate bits of information as we search.

When praying or sitting quietly, we pay attention to places in our body that cause discomfort or pain indicating this isn’t “it”. Likewise we feel a relaxation of tense muscles or sense the butterflies of excitement when we have landed on what may be the call.

Over time we begin noticing a pattern of feelings that stay with us, feelings of joy, peace, or a sense of rightness about choices we’re considering. Likewise, we may feel a sense of unease, fear, resistance, even frustration and impatience in the struggle to have an answer.

When we have done our research on possibilities and thought about what we’ve learned from wise mentors, our spirit lets us know when to be at peace and likewise lets us know that something is not yet right about where we’ve arrived.

Maybe one of these recorded conversations will assist with your pondering.

Blessings as you continue on God’s way,
Sister Tarianne

Discerniendo Con Todo Tu Ser

Hermana Tarianne

One of the qualities about religious life that often attracts people is the total availability of men and women committed to meeting the needs of people. Other callings in life demand a responsible commitment to a spouse and a family, but this calling from God demands otherwise.

For those of us called to this lifeform, the energy we get from being free to respond and being supported by our communities in that response is life-giving. While the phrase “total availability” could be deceiving, because it doesn’t necessarily mean we keep going night and day, every day. However, it does mean that when we are not taking action to alleviate needs, we pray about those needs and we listen to how God invites us to respond to them.

When you reflect on your life and how your heart is touched by those in need or you wish you could respond more freely, tune in to those feelings. They could be signs that your call is to this life of radical availability. When you are taking action on behalf of those in need, pay attention to how your spirit is lifted up. Your responses matter and can be indicators of your call.

Please talk with a trusted mentor or spiritual director about your experiences. These are ways God calls us. God may be trying to get your attention!

Blessings in your search,
Sister Tarianne

Disponibilidad Radical

Hermana Tarianne

I read a tweet from Pope Francis in which he reminded young people (and all of us) that God loves them! He was strong in this reminder and wants every young person to remember this truth.

It’s easy, although painful sometimes, to forget how much we’re loved and accepted by God as we are and because of who we are. This doesn’t mean we’re perfect or that we don’t have to make changes in our lives. It does mean that even while we are imperfect, even as we long to know what God is asking of us, we are held closely in a loving embrace by the Author of Life, our loving God.

This truth is good to remember when we get lost in the confusion and questions of a discernment journey. We may feel like we are choosing between two goods or among several good options for our lives. That’s because we are! God’s love shows up in the abundance of choices before us.

However painful the striving to know or the struggle to choose the right path for our lives, it can help to know that all during the discernment, at every point in the process, God is loving us and encouraging us.

Once we choose and our decision is made, we have room to notice the peace of God is there with us! May you experience the powerful presence of this love as you discern your call.

Blessings,
Sister Tarianne

¡Eres Amada!

Bendiciones,
Hermana Tarianne

When I am in a “microwave-way-of-thinking” I try to rush everything forward and fast, like warming up leftovers, but that mode doesn’t give me time for quiet reflection. Instead, I try to go at a speed that’s all-too-familiar in our everyday lives. Experience has taught me there is no fast way to discern. It actually does take time. The results are worth taking enough of it.

If I keep my heart open while discerning, I continue receiving insights that help me see and hear where God is calling me. The nature of the discernment process is that the insights unfold rather than strike like a bolt of lightning.

Quiet and stillness allow me to focus, to pray, to listen. Reading about decisions others have made gives me more information and may even inspire me. Listening to friends, family members, spiritual directors, and other mentors can help me clarify or confirm what I might be thinking and feeling.

Microwaves are an amazing technology, but they represent a speed not meant for the deeply personal reflection of hearing God’s call. Discernment is a process, not a mechanical or electronic means of knowing.

Blessings,
Sister Tarianne

Bendiciones,
Hermana Tarianne

During the life of Jesus, notice how he centered everything in relationships; with his Father and the Spirit, but also with his immediate family, his close disciples/friends and those in need of healing and challenging to live in right relationships with truth, love and all creation. When he became human, he did it because of a relationship with the rest of us humans.

Now it’s our turn in our daily lives to carry on the same kinds of relationships, especially ones that take us out of our comfort zone, those that demand that we love everyone, even the unlovable and those who are different from us.

As we discern God’s call for our lives, how can we best be about relationships? What life form – religious life, priesthood, married life or single life – would allow us to be about the priority of creating and sustaining right relationships? What clues do we find in our hearts for this deep call of service? What more information do we need before we take the risk of deciding? What is the right time for a decision because one of the pitfalls of discernment is to keep discerning and not decide. In other words, we can get stuck.

If we can help you with making a decision or to get unstuck, please be in touch. You also may want to view these stories of others who have taken the risk and decided.

May the Spirit guide you to your decision,
Sister Tarianne

Hermana Tarianne

Tossing and turning most of the night a young friend of mine admitted she was also turning over and over a few possibilities in her mind about a decision she had to make for her life. Do you ever feel like you tie yourself in knots and lose sleep when you’re trying to decide?

The more challenging and consequential a decision is, the more time and energy we often spend trying to be sure it’s the right decision. Is it possible to arrive at the right decision? Or is it more fruitful to think of it as just the next decision to make with good intentions, plentiful information, fervent prayer and conversation with those wise mentors in our lives who notice our struggles and show up to support us however they can?

I suggest the latter is the case. While there’s relief in coming to a decision, there’s assurance when we get confirmation from those who know us well and from a sense in our hearts that this is the right decision. Daily living out of the decision we make for our lives affords steady, assuring feedback that confirms it. It’s that inner peace that may be the strongest confirmation of our choice(s).

May you have the inner peace for which you long,

Hermana Tarianne

We humans are funny creatures. We like our messages, especially those that come from the Holy Spirit, to be clear, directive, and loud enough so they won’t be mistaken for something else! That way we can be sure we’re following our life’s purpose.

I believe this is an issue of trust in our discernment, once we’ve opened our hearts to the workings of the Spirit and are considering how best to follow the path in our everyday lives. The desire for God can be experienced in prayer certainly, but also in the people who are really close to us. Those friends, family and colleagues who have spent time with us and who know us well can often see in us what we don’t notice – or haven’t named – in ourselves.

The whispers and nudges within can lead us closer to what God is calling us to do with our lives. Assuming we are open to look further, a spiritual director can help immensely because they are trained in the art of listening deeply to how the Spirit is communicating with us. She or he may suggest ways we also can listen more deeply and discern until we have clarity for our next step.

May your eyes be opened as were the two disciples who met Jesus on the road to Emmaus. At one point those two people realized their “hearts were burning” (with joy and realization) within them.

May you experience such joy as you discern and discover,

Descubrimiento

Hermana Tarianne

How we spend our time can reveal what’s really important, not what we say is important. I’m referring to discretionary time, not time that’s committed to a job or studies. When we have “free” time, how do we spend it?

Smartphones can give a weekly report on how much time someone spends on which apps. Amazing! It used to be if we wanted to find out how much time was being spent on which priorities, we would set up a time sheet and record our activities every half hour of the workday. Now it’s all electronically recorded!

When discerning a call from God about what to do with our lives, this kind of electronic report might come in handy! We’d be able to see for ourselves how much time, especially quality time, we’re spending listening to God or listening to those important others in our lives who convey God’s message for our lives. Tuning in requires that we make time available to give our full our attention to what’s important. A good question to ask ourselves periodically is, “How am I spending my time, my life energy?”

May each of us have the grace to tune in to what’s really important,

Hermana Tarianne

Many times questions show up when we’re trying to hear where God is calling us. I invite you to take a look at the questions below and see if they give you an insight or two.

Is your weekly ministry more life-giving and energizing than your regular job at work? Do you try to keep vocation literature you’ve been reading tucked away so no one can see it? Is there a sense in which you feel called to give more or be more and you’re trying to discover what the “more” means? Has the idea of becoming a sister come up for you repeatedly?

A relationship with God is powerful. Is your relationship with God such that you want to share the Good News with others? Does your heart long for “MORE”? Do you have a sneaking suspicion that you are on the brink of a major life decision? Are you afraid to tell friends and family that you are thinking about becoming a sister? Is there a frequent tug in your heart to serve others more?

Why not take some quiet time with these questions and see what you can discover,
Sister Tarianne
