A Sister Reflects - Reflexión de una Hermana

National Vocation Awareness Week (NVAW) is an annual week-long celebration of the Catholic Church in the United States dedicated to promoting vocations to consecrated life and ordained ministry through prayer and education, and to renew our prayers and support for women and men who are considering one of these vocations. This year, we celebrate NVAW November 5-11, 2023.

Observance of Vocation Awareness Week began in 1976 when the U.S. bishops designated the 28th Sunday of the year for the celebration. In 2014, the Committee on Clergy, Consecrated Life and Vocations moved the observance of National Vocation Awareness Week to November to encourage participation from Catholic schools and colleges in this effort.

footprint with the words the next steps infront

In Sunday’s Gospel parable the vineyard owner sent two groups of servants to the tenant farmers, one group more numerous than the one before. Both groups were rejected, beaten and some murdered. As a last resort he sent his son believing they would surely listen to him and turn over the fruits they owed him.

Sometimes aren’t we like those stubborn tenants? Don’t we get reminders we dismiss and then get more reminders of what we’re called to do with our lives and just keep ignoring the messages or putting them off till later or worse, not listening at all? I don’t know about you, but I have done that.

When we’re discerning what to do with our precious and energetic lives, prayer can help us be open to the messages – and messengers - God sends. Sometimes the reminders come through people we know and who know us well. Other times they come through strangers or through something we happen to read or hear on a podcast. God is persistent in calling us to follow. No matter where the call comes from, God has us in mind and wants us to follow.

You can simply ask: Is that God’s voice I’m hearing?

May you be open to the grace to respond!

Hermana Tarianne

An autumn landscape near pond with yellow leaves sitting on top of pond surface and trees in the background with green, yellow, red, and orange leaves.

Each year I anticipate the changes that take place as fall either gently or boldly, makes its way into our lives. While some of my friends dread fall because it ushers in winter, I’d like to suggest that during this season of change, we pause and let fall speak to us of the riches it offers each of us.

What might fall have to say? I think fall invites us to slow down, to look, and to listen. SLOW DOWN! When we slow down, when we breathe deeply and intentionally, we can become much more attentive to life around us. When we LOOK carefully at this world, we can see the magnificence of God’s creation as she begins to dress for winter. And when we LISTEN, we can hear the sounds of rain, of crunching leaves, and the voice of God.

In addition to being attentive to the outside world, fall might be inviting us to slow down our lives, to stop rushing everywhere we are committed to being. Fall might be inviting us to look within, to consciously consider what God wants us to see in the deepest recesses of our hearts. Fall might also be inviting us to listen to the voice of God within us, as well as outside of us.

As you slow down, as you look, and as you listen to the life around you and within you, invite God to be your companion in season of change.

Peace and Blessings,
Sister Maribeth

Paz y Bendiciones,
Hermana Maribeth

two women sitting at a table putting a jigsaw puzzle together

Like so many other students in high school, I spent a lot of time trying to figure out where I fit in. I dabbled in different groups, and eventually found friends. I also learned a lot about what my gifts were, and I had the opportunity to explore new directions that I never had before, in my case, show choir. Going through high school, I knew that there were areas of the school ecosystem where I would never belong. Being only a little over five feet tall, I knew it was unlikely that I would ever play for the WNBA, or even to make my high school’s team!

The question of “Where do I fit in?” often underlies discernment. While each of us can likely say where we will never fit, we can also continue to explore. How that exploration looks will be different in different places and times. However, the process remains the same, as we go beyond our normal routines, going to new places, doing new things, and learning new things in the process. I leave you with these questions as you find the ways that you fit in:

1.     Where might you find places with like-minded people?
2.     What is something you have not done, but which you know you will enjoy?
3.     Have you been feeling resistant to trying something new in your life? What would help you get past that resistance?

Blessings,
Sister Katherine

¿Dónde Me Acoplo?

Bendiciones,
Hermana Katherine

“If today you hear [God’s] voice, harden not your hearts.”  (Psalm 95)

It’s not hard to relate to this line from Psalm 95 that we prayed in response to the first reading on Sunday. Each of us is called to listen for what God is calling us to and becoming closer to God in the listening and responding. This is especially true when we are listening for clues to how we will spend our lives.

Is God urging me to respond to people in grave need, those who are economically poor or ill? Is God wanting me to pay attention to the gifts I have received and seeing how I can best use them in service? Or have I a tugging on my heart for Earth and how she is suffering, needing my attention and response to make her whole again?

Whatever your gifts, the call of God comes to your heart during times of prayer or play or conversation or service. And the Psalm urges each of us to open our hearts to the needs and the call and then to respond. May we each choose a way of love and be willing to let the response of God come through us to others.

Blessings on your journey in discerning,
Sister Tarianne

Hermana Tarianne

Sometimes we can try so hard to ‘figure out’ our vocation, to think it through and discuss it with others, as we try to come to clarity. There’s another way that might give you a new perspective: observe yourself. Step outside and notice what you are doing and choosing. That may say a lot to you. For example, what am selecting to read? What topics keep coming up in conversation? How am I spending my time? What steps am I taking in my life? These observations may give your important feedback about what you really want. Once when I was in my temporary profession years and going through a time of struggle, my mom said to me, “You keep choosing this.” She was right! Even as I struggled with certain aspects of the life, I kept making choices that kept me on the religious life path.

Of course, we can make choices for the wrong reason, say, out of fear or habit, and we need be conscious of our motivations. When we make the choices for things that challenge and stretch us, however, we can see that something deep inside us is choosing the path of life, of deeper joy, and of the Spirit. What can you learn from watching yourself today?

Sister Lorraine

Obsérvese a Sí Misma

Bendiciones,
Hermana Lorraine

"As you go, make this proclamation: 'The Kingdom of heaven is at hand.' Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, drive out demons. Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.”
(Mt 10.7-8)

The words of Jesus quoted in Matthew’s Gospel, spoken long ago to his disciples as he sent them out to minister to the people they encountered, have meaning today too. As with the disciples, our commitment to persons in need is where we are sent. Jesus affirmed the disciples as going in his name to the people who needed what they would bring.

As Dominicans we respond together to needs as we perceive them in the “signs of the times”, another way of saying the needs of the people in society today. Among so many needs calling for attention and resolution, there are choices to make. We can meet some of the needs. Others can meet some of the needs. With honest dialogue and prayer among us, we respond to needs as it is possible to do. We are always conscious there is more to do and we trust that God continues to call other disciples to be part of the mission!

If you would like to know more about how we Dominicans respond to people in need, we invite you to consider joining us to “Learn, Pray, Share and Celebrate” from August 7-8, 2023 here in Adrian at our retreat center.  Click here for more information and to register. We promise shared meals so conversations can happen.

I hope you will join us,
Sr. Tarianne

Hermana Tarianne

Study is an important part of Dominican life and has been ever since the beginning when the early Dominicans realized that study was necessary in order to preach the Word of God effectively. Dominicans use study as a discernment tool as well, as we study current events so that we can hear where God is calling us to the needs of the world. Study is also an important part of our own discernment, whether we are first looking at a congregation, a new ministry, or making any other changes to our life. Study gives us the information we need in order to make an informed choice, and we can then take that information we have learned into discussion with God as our discernment deepens.
I invite you to consider these questions for your own discernment:

1.    What information do I need to make a particular decision?
2.    Where can I get the information that I need?
3.    Is there someone who can give me the information that I need, including informing me about information that I did not realize I needed?
4.    Once I have the information I need, what steps will I take so that I can bring the matter to prayer?

If you want to learn more about the importance of study for Dominicans, I encourage you to check out this video: Preach with Your Life: Study.

Blessings,
Sister Katherine

Bendiciones,

Hermana Katherine

Like many of you, I have felt overwhelmed with the number of emails, Zooms, and live streams that have arrived in my mailbox these past few weeks. And then, there are the phone calls… didn’t I put my number on the “do not call” list years ago?

While preparing a presentation on the Psalms for a specific group of learners, I found myself reflecting on the strengths and weaknesses of modern technology. Trust me, I am no expert in this field! Yet, like countless other people, it has been necessary for me to adapt (to some degree) to the demands that technology requires of us. Consider how utterly impossible it was for us to have imagined, even seven or eight years ago, that we could connect with people all over the globe for conversations that involve 10, 20, 30, 40 or more people! Today’s class had me marveling over the advances that have taken place in our world.

Despite all these advancements, words that stand out for me are mute and unmute. If you have been on Zooms that engage multiple participants, I suspect that you have heard your host say these words on multiple occasions.

Hmm. When should we mute? When is it important for us stop and simply LISTEN? And when is it important for us to unmute, to let the feelings of our heart be spoken, heard?

When we pray, it is important to attend to both “muting” and “unmuting.” While we certainly need to “listen/mute” to hear God’s word to us, it is also extremely important for us to “unmute,” to speak what is deepest in our hearts to God.

Peace and blessings,
Sister Maribeth

Enmudezca/ Desenmudezca, Por Favor

Paz y bendiciones,
Hermana Maribeth

One of the things that I desired when I was discerning religious life was a sign. I wanted something obvious and tangible that I could point towards and say, yes, I am not choosing to go in this direction on a whim. That sign did not come in an announcement of angels from above or a neon flashing light. Rather, the sign that I did receive was a deepening relationship with God that allowed me to trust God enough to take the first step.

Our desire for a sign expresses our desire to have God speak to us in a way that is clear, obvious, and straightforward. In the busyness of modern life, it becomes hard to listen for the small, still voice of God that Elijah heard on Mount Horeb (1 Kings 19:12-13). How can we pay attention to God’s voice surrounded by so much noise? The world is not going to create space for us to hear God’s voice, and there will always be another podcast, another TV show or movie, another song or video game that is taking up space in our lives. In the midst of so much noise, we have to create the space to listen to God’s voice.

I spend a lot of time sitting in silence in prayer, not because I expect to hear God’s voice, but so that I am ready to hear God speaking to me. These silent conversations with God have provided me with a foundation of trust. I know that God will be with me when I make a decision and will continue to be present afterwards. In the end, I have received many signs from God. They may not be flashy, loud, or obvious, but they have touched me profoundly because they have shown me that God desires a relationship with me, not only for a brief moment, but for my whole life.

Blessings,
Sister Katherine

Bendiciones,
Hermana Katherine
