A Sister Reflects - Reflexión de una Hermana

a sandy area with lots of large, jagged rocks sloping up the side of a mountain

When I began on the path to religious life I ran into a few rocks along the way. If I saw them, I was able to move them, but some surprised me and caused me to stumble a little bit. One of the stumbles I didn’t see coming was my brother’s adverse reaction to my telling him that I was discerning religious life. When the push back came, I didn’t really know what to do, so I took it to prayer. My explanation of the joy within me as I was getting closer to entering the congregation didn’t seem to be enough for him. Through my prayer and deep listening I realized he had a very personal reason for the push back. So, we talked about it, and I was able to alleviate his fears. Once that impediment was removed his whole demeanor changed and he celebrated with great joy as I made my vows.

Proverbs 18:15 says, “the heart of the discerning acquires knowledge, for the ears of the wise seek it out.” I am grateful I did not make a rash assumption and through prayer was able to listen even more deeply to my brother’s concerns. What looked like a boulder blocking the road was shattered into pebbles put along my path and I was free to continue the path God was calling me to. So may you be blessed with grace to see the path in front of you and do not fear any obstacle.

Blessings

Bendiciones,
Hermana Mary Jones, OP

a paved road with a close-up of painted white arrows pointing forward, left, and right with the word START painted underneath

When Mary had a visit from an angel letting her know she was chosen to birth the son of God and when Peter, Andrew, James, and John heard Jesus say, "Follow me," they were not so much deciding as they were responding to a call or an invitation. They could have refused, but they didn’t, thank God! Now those incidences of "call" or invitation are written in scripture for our inspiration, prayer, and reflection.

A call, an invitation to a particular way of life is a gift. It is not meant to be taken lightly. We each have that unique call in our own lives. No one else can respond in the ways we can to the call.

The tools for finding out what our call is include praying, journaling, and quiet. These are major ways. In using them we can arrive at what we believe is our call or invitation from God. It’s good to share our insights and conclusions with a trusted mentor, spiritual director, or confidant and see what feedback comes from that conversation.

Be assured that the call to use your gifts is there for you. If we can be of help in your search, please contact us. We are planning a weekend retreat in January for young women seeking to know their call. You can learn more here.

Please know all of us pray for you every day,
Sister Tarianne

Decidir vs Responder

Hermana Tarianne

What is National Vocation Awareness Week?

National Vocation Awareness Week (NVAW) is an annual week-long celebration of the Catholic Church in the United States dedicated to promoting vocations to consecrated life and ordained ministry through prayer and education, and to renew our prayers and support for women and men who are considering one of these vocations. This year, we celebrate NVAW November 6-12, 2022.

Observance of Vocation Awareness Week began in 1976 when the U.S. bishops designated the 28th Sunday of the year for the celebration. In 2014, the Committee on Clergy, Consecrated Life and Vocations moved the observance of National Vocation Awareness Week to November to encourage participation from Catholic schools and colleges in this effort.

During the month of November, we are encouraged to remember those women and men, our ancestors in faith, who have gone before us, saints and sinners. In many cultures, this is a time to recall deceased family members and friends, and to share stories of these souls who have impacted our lives in so many ways.

As we begin this month, a month when days grow shorter and darkness begins to fill more of our time and space, let us enter into a reflective mode and welcome the darkness. Let us remember that Christ is our light and our life. Invite God to be with you in the dark and in the quiet.

On the first day of this month, the Feast of All Saints, the Gospel reading is Matthew’s account of the Beatitudes (chapter 5). These words remind us of what it means to be a discerning follower of Jesus. Those who cast their lot with Jesus, do not take major decisions lightly. In prayer this week, ask that all your decisions, particularly those you make while voting, be guided by the light of Christ.

Peace and blessings,
Sister Maribeth

Bendito Sea

Paz y bendiciones,
Sor Maribeth

Adrian Dominican Sisters with horse and buggy

In the United States, the month of October is Family History Month, and during this month, I like to spend some time celebrating the stories in my family tree. I enjoy the opportunity to learn more about my ancestors who were everything from pioneers to cavaliers, scoundrels to saints, not to mention everything in-between. I especially like to take a moment to remember other members of my family who also entered into religious life, and to be grateful for the gift of their lives in service to the people of God.

Now, I belong to more than my biological family. In addition to the physical DNA I share with my parents, I also share “spiritual DNA” with many other Dominicans. This looks like the spirit I share with the Sisters who make up my congregation, the Adrian Dominican Sisters, and I share that same spirit with all the Dominican communities around the world. Their stories are also important to me, and I have found inspiration from the women who have gone before me, from the early Sisters who arrived in Adrian, Michigan to become nurses to railroad workers to the many Sisters who have worked for the justice of those living on the margins. Their stories have become part of how I see myself today, the same as those stories I learned growing up about my family of origin.

Now, as a member of the Adrian Dominican Sisters, my own story is part of the larger story of my community. This is truly the gift of community, as we recognize that our stories are part of the whole and that they affect the whole. The ministries I have participated in and the relationships I am part of speak to who I am and who we are together. During this Family History Month, I know that I am, truly, a member of the Dominican Family.

Blessings,
Sister Katherine

Bendiciones,
Hermana Katherine

Discerning significant changes in life takes courage. Do I take that new job? Do I buy a bigger house? Do I go back to school to finish or earn a degree? Making important decisions is a process and weighing the options involved and choosing to go forward takes courage.

The same can be said for discerning God’s will for us. We invite God into our discernment because we know that our faith is limited by our humanity. Prayer helps reveal the options available to us. God might lead you to move to a different town or leave a job. So, our faith must be mixed with courage. Take a leap of faith, have the courage to say yes to God’s invitation, and dedicate your life to God.

Sister Mary Jones, OP

Finding quiet time to collect your thoughts or pray can be like walking into a house where toddlers and young children live and trying to avoid stepping on their toys, blocks, and other playthings as you walk from the front door to the kitchen. There is a lot in the way and no way to walk in a straight line.

That also is how all of us sometimes are in our lives. There are things that get in our way of our best intentions to make time to pray, or read Scripture, or just be quiet and listen to God speaking in the quiet of your heart. Although God is not limited in the ways God communicates with us, quiet does seem to be one of God’s favorites!

Do you make the time and space you need for quiet? Is your time best in the morning before a busy day gets started? Are you better in the evening before going to bed where you have the day to reflect on, thank God for and ask questions about? Quiet time gives us chances to tune in to what the Holy Spirit may be calling us to be about in our lives.

May you seek and find that space and quiet to open your heart where God can speak. Sometimes calming music helps.

Blessings,
Sister Tarianne

Bendiciones,
Hermana Tarianne

silhouette of a woman against a sunset

Very soon, we in Adrian hope to welcome women interested in exploring Dominican vowed life.

Many women who are pondering how they might best live their commitment to the Gospel, have not had the opportunity to discuss their questions with professed Sisters. For the most part, the “faces” of Sisters are not nearly as evident as they were decades ago, when most Sisters wore veils and long habits and were known as women who taught in the parish schools or worked in Catholic hospitals.

While the number of religious Sisters has certainly diminished, and while many of us are not as easily recognizable by our dress as we had been, be assured that religious life is alive and well! And because the Adrian Dominican Sisters are deeply committed to welcoming women to discern their call with us, we invite you to join us in Adrian, Michigan, the weekend of October 14-16. You will be our guests in our lovely retreat and conference building, Weber Center.

During the weekend, you will have the opportunity to pray with us, share meals and conversation, hear the stories of how some of us discerned our call to Dominican life, and listen to some of the incredible ministries our Sisters have been engaged in throughout their religious life.

Please come and see how God might be inviting you to live your life!

You can register here.

Peace and blessings,
Sister Maribeth Howell, OP

Ven y Vea

Paz y bendiciones,
Hermana Maribeth

When I began discerning becoming a Sister, I thought of religious life as being something mysterious, and certainly far removed from my own life. How could I make a good decision for me if I was looking at a life I did not really understand? The answer was to come and see for myself. In spending time with Sisters, seeing how they prayed, ministered, and lived for myself, I became able to envision myself praying, ministering, and living among them. Making the leap to visit the Sisters was scary because I had to be honest with both the Sisters I visited and myself that I felt drawn to this way of life.

After my initial visit to the Sisters in Adrian, Michigan, the call to come and see did not go away. The call shifted as I was invited to visit Sisters ministering in other parts of the country and later to explore the life in a deeper way as first a Candidate and then a Novice. That first visit opened up the door to new invitations, and I’m grateful for the hospitality that was offered to me during my visit that made me start to understand my invitation from God in new ways.

In October, we are offering a Come and See Retreat for women who are ready to take the next step on this journey. If you are feeling overwhelmed at the possibility of religious life, or if you have thinking about it for a while and feel called to go deeper, this weekend will provide an opportunity to explore your call in a new way. You can register here. I hope to see you there!

Blessings,
Sister Katherine

Ven y Vea

Bendiciones,
Hermana Katherine

a small turtle on a wood trunk in the water

Life is full of decision-making and during my busy day working at a university there are always decisions to made. Some are of the “Just Do It” variety, borrowing the Nike™ phrase. Not a lot of thought is needed, it just needs to get done. So, I or one of my team members just gets it done. Other decisions require a little thought – where to hang a picture or what color to paint a room? A little more work needs to be done for these decisions.

The biggest decisions are the life growth ones, decisions that impact my future. Before I became a Sister, these decisions evolved around job or relationship choices. As a Sister, it is usually about choosing to answer the call to a particular ministry. These are decisions I ask God for help with and most of the time, I need quiet and whenever possible to be out in nature. Sitting amongst the trees, feeling the breeze on my face, or watching a turtle swim along the water, allows me to focus on my breathing and listen to my heart. The answer doesn’t always come while I am sitting there, but God’s calming presence is there and soon enough the answer comes.

Sister Mary Jones, OP
